DeFreitas, Simmons grab the spotlight

activity this weekend as the sport shares the spotlight with soccer which kicks off a new league programme.

The second annual testimonial match will be played at Lord's today with English county players Phil Simmons and Philip DeFreitas being the star attractions.

Last weekend Simmons helped Leicestershire win the county championship for only the second time and on Wednesday evening was named Cricketer of the Year in England.

Yesterday the two players enjoyed a round of golf together, with DeFreitas arriving on the Island on Thursday. And today they will play on opposite teams in a 40-overs match starting at the completion of the opening match involving past players.

That first match (20 overs per side) will be followed by a presentation to the honourees W.F. (Chummy) Hayward, McDonald Simmons and Jim Woolridge, with the main match -- 40 overs -- starting at about 12.30.

The departure for Guyana this morning of the Bermuda team has robbed the main match of most of the Island's top players. The two teams will be captained by Graham Fox and Dexter Basden and also feature the likes of Noel Gibbons, Ricky Hill, Treadwell Gibbons, Dennis Archer, Dexter Smith, Lionel Cann and Del Hollis.

Basden' Willow Cuts team will also be involved in action tomorrow when they take on Bailey's Bay at Sea Breeze Oval in the Open League. Cuts need four points to avoid being relegated to the First Division next season and they should be confident of achieving that as Bay have four players on international duty.

If Cuts claim the four points then Cleveland will be relegated along with Nationals.

Two First Division matches this weekend see Flatts take on Southampton Rangers today and then play Devonshire Rec. tomorrow.
