Depending champs make their move
after yesterday's second round of the Bermuda Goodwill Tournament.
The four-man team from Westfield, Massachusetts led by club professional Bob Mucha carded the day's -- and tournament's -- best round, a net 56 at par-71 Castle Harbour, for a two-round total of 117 to move two shots in front of first round co-leaders Waccabuc Country Club.
The latter tallied 61 at Mid Ocean, adding to Monday's 58 at Belmont, but it was not enough to retain the lead, as Mucha and his band, including Mike Polansky and Mark and Ken Detora, were in full song amid near perfect conditions.
Starting on the back nine, they stroked to a 26 at the turn despite a bogey at the 14th hole and while things cooled slightly on the final half they still managed a 30.
"We made a lot of birdies, nine gross birdies and four birdies for eagles, which really helped us,'' said Mucha, a regular visitor to local shores. "The whole team played well. I had a lot of birdies, but it didn't matter with these guys (teammates) making birdies for eagles.'' While last year saw the men from New England come from seven strokes down on the final day to win by a single shot this time they are in the role of the hunted.
Having today off Mucha was hopeful of retaining some of the fire when play resumes tomorrow.
"It's tough to say what will happen ... you never know,'' he said. "No lead is safe, but it's better to be two shots ahead than two behind.'' Three teams -- Winchester Country Club, Agawam Hunt Club and Spring Lake Golf Club -- stand tied at 120 after rounds of 60 (Mid Ocean), 62 (Mid Ocean) and 57 (Belmont) respectively.
However, Winchester does lead the gross category at 126 accompanied by Willow Bend Club. Shaker Farms (129) stands alone in third.
Today has the professional championships taking place at Port Royal, with 1992 winner Rick Osberg of Waynesborough Country Club in search of his fifth junior title in the event.
