Derbyshire face challenging weekend

five today and tomorrow at the eastern end of the Island when they go up against Bermuda today at Lord's and a St. George's Cup Match XI tomorrow at Wellington Oval.

Derbyshire have been less than convincing so far with only bad application by the middle-order batsmen for both the Bermuda Under-25s and Somerset denied them shock victories after the national team's chase was stopped by rain in the opener.

Twice, when the two local teams were well-placed, leg-spinner Richard Sladdin, who did not play against Bermuda in the first match, came on to spark batting collapses as his figures of five for 18 and five for 26 proved the deciding factor.

The fact that the local batsmen have come up short against Sladdin might be enough to persuade Derbyshire to carry him for the two matches this weekend, which should provide them with their toughest opposition.

Derbyshire's selection policy has been to rest two bowlers while carrying the same batting order. But their batting, too, has looked suspect in the middle order with totals of 219, 184 and 210 being built around contributions from their top four, captain Kim Barnett, Peter Bowler, John Morris and Chris Adams.

Each have passed the 50 mark with Adams getting 53 against Bermuda, Barnett 59 against the Under-25s and Bowler and Morris 58 and 80 respectively against Somerset.

Bermuda have retained the nucleus of their squad for today's match with former captain Allan Douglas available for this match and replacing Roger Trott behind the stumps. Douglas will also play tomorrow for the St. George's Cup Match XI.

The Bermuda selectors chose not to bring in another batsman for the injured Ricky Hill from the squad released early in the week so one of the youngsters, Glenn Smith or Jason Lewis, could play today, with Arnold Manders possibly opening the innings with Dennis Archer.

Both Smith and Lewis looked promising against the tourists on Tuesday at Devonshire Rec.

The national team will be joined by English coach Doug Ferguson who arrived on Thursday night to begin a stint that will carry through the Pakistan and West Indies `A' tours.

St. George's will have six players from last year's Cup Match team in tomorrow's match at Wellington Oval. The team will be led by Graham Fox in the absence of injured captain Wendell Smith who was due to have an operation on his injured knee yesterday in the United States.

David Adams has been overlooked so the spin will be shared by Eugene Foggo and Arnold Manders with Clarkie Trott coming in to share the new ball with Kenny Phillips. Dexter Smith will open the innings with Clay Smith.

Both matches are 50 overs starting at 10 a.m. and the Bermuda players should report to the ground by 8.45 a.m.

Derbyshire play the final match of their tour on Tuesday when they meet league champions Western Stars at Somerset in a match starting at 11 a.m.
