Dev. Colts prepare move to east end

Garrison Field in St. George's the venue they are interested in, according to a club source.

Officials of the club could not be reached for comment but it is understood that by the end of the year Colts will be operating at the Government owned field next to RAA Club.

They have been given notice to vacate their present ground at Frog Lane so that further work can be carried out on the adjacent National Stadium which includes reclaiming Frog Lane. Colts are presently negotiating with Government to lease Garrison Field, which is also adjacent to the now closed St. George's Secondary School.

Colts, who have used two other St. George's grounds -- Wellington Oval and Lord's -- previously as their home ground, have been at Frog Lane since 1989.

That move has not been without controversy, with area residents complaining about the increase in traffic -- and noise -- when matches were held at both Frog Lane and Devonshire Rec.

Garrison Field has not been used for a First Division game since 1973-74 when the now defunct Wellington Rovers were in the First Division.

However, Colts are no strangers to the east end, having used Wellington Oval up to the 1983-84 season and then St. David's from '84-85 to '88-89 for their home matches, before moving into their current home at Frog Lane at the start of the 1989-90 season.

Mid-Island teams are also familiar with the St. George's grounds with Boulevard using St. David's for the last few years while North Village also played at St. David's in the mid-1970s.

The switch by Devonshire Colts means that all three grounds in St. George's will be used for First Division matches in the same season while two Second Division teams, St. David's and Hamilton Parish, also play at either St.

David's or Wellington Oval.

Three years ago four First Division teams -- St. George's, Boulevard, Hamilton Parish and St. David's -- shared the two grounds and that number could return to four next season if St. David's live up to expectations and gain promotion.

On one particular Sunday -- March 17 next year -- all their First Division grounds will be occupied, with St. George's at home to North Village, Devonshire Colts entertaining Southampton Rangers and Boulevard taking on PHC.
