Easy does it for forties, PHC
Commercial Cricket League records with emphatic victories on Sunday when Sandys Sports Club skipper Terry Corday took the day's batting honours by hammering an unbeaten 146.
William (Boxhead) Minors was PHC's star as the soccer giants cruised to a nine-wicket victory over Devonshire Stars at the Royal Naval Field.
Minors took three for 22 in five overs as Stars were dismissed for 132 and then cracked an unbeaten 88 as PHC replied with 137 for one in 30 overs.
Minors, who put on 126 for the first wicket with Dean Bryon (31), hit one six and 13 fours.
Forties joined PHC on 20 points by beating St Michael by eight wickets after dismissing their opponents cheaply.
There was a sensational start to the game at Warwick Secondary when Forties' skipper Gordon Campbell, who finished with four for 18, bowled Leon Dickinson and Michael Campbell with the first and third balls of the opening over.
Legay Cannonier also went for nought in the second over and St Michael, missing the services of David Gibbs, slumped to 27 for six before Junior Lindo (30) and Ian Coke (22) helped lift the total to 80, James Thomas chipping in with three for 27. Six batsmen failed to score.
Oliver Franks, who earlier took two for 16, and Mark Melvin laid the foundation for Forties' easy victory with an opening stand of 47. Melvin, who hit one six and five fours, finished unbeaten on 43.
West Indian Association, last season's runners-up, bounced back from their defeat the previous week to beat North Village by 59 runs at Shelly Bay, thanks to another fine knock by Roosevelt Maronie and a five-wicket haul by Junior Watts.
Maronie followed up his 60 against Forties by making 48 of WIA's 162 for nine and then saw Watts grab five for 44 as Village were dismissed for 103 with three overs remaining. Kim Pitt was Village's top bowler with three for 38.
Terry Corday, one of the league's most explosive batsmen, came in when Sandys Sports Club were a precarious 11 for three but lifted his side to a commanding 270 for five against Safeguard Security at Malabar.
One hundred and eighteen of Corday's unbeaten 146 came in boundaries and he received solid support from Michael Bremar who hit one six and nine fours in his 57 as the Safeguard attack was put to the sword.
But Safeguard replied strongly to reach 159 for three and secure a draw as Herman James (40), Ben Alexander (37 not out) and Adrian Jennings (36) all made useful contributions.
