Evan (Big Cat) Williams, the golfer who has made big hitting his trademark, will be putting on a free exhibition for junior golfers on Thursday, May 7 at

Titleist Golf Company has arranged the exhibition, which is open to all, between 5.30 and 6.30 p.m.

Williams, who impressed those at Port Royal Golf Club last year with his long drives as he took the shortest route to greens -- often over trees -- has a reputation of having the longest drive in golf. His longest drive in competition was estimated at 496 yards, that being longer than the famed par-five 13th hole at the Augusta National Golf Club, which is home of The Masters tournament.

So powerful is the six-foot-six, 220-pound Williams that he can drive a ball through a 450-page telephone book.

"I put the book two and a half feet in front of the tee, just far enough that my swing will clear the book,'' Williams said in an article in 1986. "I use any phone book that's available -- 450 pages is the best I've done. The newer the book the better.'' Williams is a two time winner of the National Long Driving Championship and was one of the founders of the 350 Club, that elite group of men who have hit the ball 350 yards or more in competition.

Bermuda Professional Golfers Association president Kim Swan yesterday urged all adults that attend the exhibition to bring their children. "If they don't have any kids, then find a kid for the day,'' he said.

Somerset Bridge Recreation Club will hold a tournament at St. George's Golf Club on Sunday with a shot-gun start at 8 a.m.

BOWLING BOW Antoine Jones defeated David Abraham in last week's Sweeper at Warwick Lanes.

The event was well attended by over 44 entries each of whom bowled two games with the top 16 advancing to take part in the next round, which was a match game single elimination.

Eight bowlers emerged as quarter-finalists including Dean Lightbourne, Colbert Pearman, Jue Van Lowe, Vance Gilbert, Chris Bardgett, Clem Lespere, Jones and Abraham.

Victories over Lespere and Lightbourne saw Jones through to the final, while Bardgett and Pearman were Abraham's victims.

Another Sweeper is scheduled for tonight starting at 6.45 p.m. Unlike the first it will be a handicap format.
