Fahy shatters freestyle record
breaking performance in the 1500 metres freestyle as the BASA Winter National Age Group Championships continued on Saturday at the BASA pool.
Fahy, who doesn't usually enter this event in competition, slashed 22 seconds off the old record of 17:40.07 set by Nick Rowse in 1984. Fahy's time was 17:18.16.
There were several other good performances in the same event with Craig Ferguson (16) of Harbour Club turning in a personal best of 18:24.63 to finish second to Fahy in the 15 and over category. Ronald Cowen (14) won the event in the 13-14 age group, finishing in a time of 18:24.00 which was also a personal best.
Some 100 swimmers from all three of the Island's competitive swimming clubs took part in the second day of competition.
Graham Smith of Triangles set a new mark in the boys 11-12 200 metres breaststroke, his time of 2:57.08 improving his own previous best of 2:58.52.
It broke the old record set by Nuri Latham of Sharks in July, 1994.
Emma Fenton of Sharks continues to lead the girls eight and under division, followed by Christina Dodwell who won both the 100 metres freestyle and breaststroke.
Cameron McDonald of Triangles has won all five races in which he has entered while Sharks team-mates, James O'Shea and Cameron Cooper, are presently in second and third place.
After missing the Summer Age Group Championships, Ashley Aitken of Harbour has won all five of her races in personal best times in the 9-10 age group. Meghan Jones of Triangles and Sarah Cooper of Sharks are also swimming well and will be vying for second place.
Roy-Allan Burch of Sharks continues to lead the 9-10 boys and posted wins in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Adam Petty (9) of Triangles won the 200 metres breaststroke in a close finish with Jason Lawrence of Harbour. Petty's time of 2:50.86 took 16 seconds off his entry time.
Alexander Collins of Harbour and Stephen Kenny of Triangles are holding on to second and third places in the points count.
Rebecca Hanson of Sharks posted two first place finishes in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, but will relinquish her lead as she will be unable to compete on November 18 in the last day of the championships, having returned to school in the UK. Team-mate Candace Marson won the 200 breaststroke and holds down second place with Emma Rego in third place.
Competition in the boys 11-12 age group is fierce with Jonathan Herring of Sharks and Graham Smith of Triangles both with 31 points. Smith has two firsts in the 100 butterfly and 200 breaststroke with second in the 200 freestyle.
Herring won the 200 free and was second in the 100 fly. There is also a tie for third place in this age group between Paul Murphy of Triangles and Scott Simmons of Harbour.
In the girls 13-14, Abigail Madeiros of Sharks produced two more personal bests with a second place finish in the 800 freestyle and a first in the 200 breaststroke. She is tied for first place in points with Elisha Miller of Harbour who had two firsts, in the 200 butterfly and 800 freestyle.
Jessica Sousa had two personal bests in the 200 butterfly and 200 breast and is currently in third place.
In the boys 13-14 age group, Ronald Cowen of Sharks has won all his races and has a firm hold on first place in points. He is followed by Michael Pantry and Paul Fox of Harbour.
In the girls 15 and over group, Zoe Roberts of Sharks leads team-mate Sarah Titterton, while the boys 15 and over sees Stephen Fahy and Craig Ferguson of Harbour both with 21 points.
Although Fahy has won all of his races he has only entered three. Ferguson has a first place in the 200 breast while Michael Hanson of Sharks won the 200 butterfly.
The final day of competition in the championships takes place on Saturday, November 18. The sprint events will be held on that day and trophies will be presented to high points winners in each age group, both boys and girls.
