Favourite Frigerio surges on

Tennis Club Invitational was quickly dashed by favourite Greg Frigerio as he disposed of Eugene Simmons in straight sets 6-1 6-2.

Frigerio, one of the top three players on the Island when on form, was exactly that on the day, never allowing Simmons, himself a quality player, into the match that lasted less than 90 minutes.

Meanwhile, Nanny Vanneck and Gill Butterfield continued their winning ways when they beat Janet Burke and Helen Pecori 6-4 7-6, then Vanneck teamed up with Earl Leader to oust Pat Siddle and Michael Keyes 6-2 6-1. Leader later partnered Martin Zolnai as the pair beat Jonathan Adams and Miles Tyler in the men's doubles.

American first timer Ann Manning, though getting off to a slow start, is beginning to turn a few heads at Coral Beach, the venue for the annual tournament, as she and Nicola Van Schroeter took almost three hours to dispose of Pat Pamplin and Mary Jane Kakas 6-3 1-6 7-5, before beating her host Betty Orteig and Lexis Petty 6-4 7-5.

Manning wasn't finished, however, as she later teamed up with Jonathan Adams to beat Mary Stones and Peter Purdy in straight sets.

In the day's longest match, the combination of Nina Alami and crowd favourite Dick Pound outlasted Daphine and Gene Whitman 6-3 6-7 6-4.
