Forties in fine form

as the new Commercial Cricket League season started in haphazard fashion on Sunday.

The other two scheduled games did not take place and newcomers Quickie Lickie have since announced they are withdrawing from the league because of a shortage of players.

Quickie Lickie were accepted at last month's annual meeting as a replacement for St. Michael and their withdrawal, following the elevation of PHC to the Premier Division, reduces to league's strength to seven teams.

Ironically, the team Quickie Lickie were due to play on Sunday, West Indian Association, had told their opponents last Wednesday they would be unable to field a side.

Safeguard Security turned up with just one player at Shelly Bay and conceded the points to Devonshire Stars.

Former top amateur boxer Donville Yarde knocked the stuffing out of Sandys Sports Club at Warwick Secondary where North Village romped to a 107-run victory.

Yarde, a medium pace swing bowler, snapped up seven for 12 in 14 overs, six of them maidens, as 10-man Sandys were bundled out for 59 in reply to Village's 166 for seven.

Opener David Scraders hit two boundaries in an unbeaten 65, guiding his side from a shaky 84 for five and adding 40 runs in an unbroken eighth wicket stand of 40 with Kim Pitt (29 not out).

Forties lost skipper Gordon Campbell with only one run on the board -- smartly caught behind by Thomas Ball -- but half centuries by Dave Woodhead and Gary Edwards and an unbeaten 45 by Mark Melvin spurred the defending champions to an imposing 248 for seven declared against Pembroke United at the Royal Naval Field.

Pembroke, back in the league after a year's absence, fielded only eight men and were made to toil as Woodhead hammered four sixes -- including three in one over from Norman Godwin -- and five fours in his 64. Edwards' 51 included four fours.

Skipper Legay Cannonier was the pick of the Pembroke attack, picking up three for 56.

Michael Campbell followed up his two for 65 with an unbeaten 32 but found little support as Pembroke were dismissed for 74, Gordon Campbell taking three for 20.
