first division of the Swiss Timing BSRA Club Championships.

Yates finally came through 10-8 in the 25-minute opener, but Furtado edged the second game by the same score and then took advantage of Yates' growing tiredness to win the next two.

In the men's first division, Spencer Moss shattered the hopes of 1998 finalist Jan Brewer. Brewer stormed through the first game 9-2 but Moss equalised in the second. Moss took a long third game 10-8 but went down 9-6 in the fourth.

Brewer saved several match balls in the decider but finally caved in to one of Moss's brilliantly executed backhand drops as the game finished 9-6.

In men's division three, what looked set to be a long battle between Nigel Henderson and Geoff Redmond was cut short in the second game. Henderson had taken a tightly contested first 10-8 and at 4-4 in the second, Redmond hit the wall, literally, as he dived for a shot. After taking a break to ice the growing lump on his head, he could only play another two rallies before having to concede.
