Garland earns scholarship offer

place on Columbia College's golf team after impressing coaches during trials last week.

The 18-year-old shot a four-over-par 76 at the 6,925-yard Bull Creek course while playing with three other current team members and was immediately extended an invitation by coach Earl Bagley to attend the establishment located in Georgia.

In lieu of a scholarship, international school fees were waived -- his enrollment cost will be that of a regular American student -- but next year he will be placed on a full scholarship.

Columbia won the Division II championship in 1992, were runners-up this year and are currently ranked 23rd in the nation.

"He (Bagley) said he (Garland) has a great future and he would really like to have him on his team,'' said an excited Dave Garland, Chris' father. "Chris was extremely nervous and myself, I couldn't watch. I had to take off...it was like trial by fire.'' Garland, set to graduate from Saltus this month, is the defending champion at the Atlantic International Invitational where he has won every age group, four in total.

With his addition the total number of Bermudians on golfing scholarships is now three, with Duncan Zelkin at Jacksonville University in Florida and Kim Marshall at Wake Forest.

"It's a hell of an accolade to the Bermuda junior golf programme to have this many youngsters overseas,'' said the senior Garland.

Chris will be among esteemed company when he finally lands at Columbia. The squad contains five All-Americans, including Martin Lonardi and Diego Ventureiro, both of Argentina, South Africa's Mark Immelman and Scott Clark, hailing from Canada.

Clark was third to local Anthony Mocklow at the Bermuda Amateur Stroke Play Championships four years ago.

During the trial round last Monday, Garland's 76 tied Immelman, while beating Clark by a stroke, but Lonardi showed his class with a sparkling even-par 72.

Ocean View I surged into second place in the Bermuda Golf Association Amstel `A' League standings as they had all six members shoot sub-80 rounds over the weekend.

Ocean View I totalled 301 to defeat Port Royal I by two strokes and were three in front of BGA Men.

In all, 28 players carded scores of 80 or better, with individual honours going to Adrian Arnold and Arthur Jones, each with 72.

Currently Port Royal I head the tables on 15 points followed by Ocean View, whose 10 points gave them 141 overall. Port Royal II lie third at 121 . The `B' League got under way at Belmont and the third Port Royal squad kept up the tradition seen thus far as they rolled to victory.

Leading the charge was Robert Chandler, producing a steady round of 72.

Meanwhile, youngster Robert Spurling belied his years in registering a 73 for the Bermuda Junior Golf Association team.

Port Royal III's score was 230 compared to 236 and 238 for BJGA and BGA Ladies respectively.

Both `A' and `B' Leagues play at Port Royal this Saturday. Captains are reminded that those team members taking part in the Stroke Play Championships will have those scores counted for league results.

BGA Medal Play will take place at Port Royal on Saturday.
