Geoff Wing coolly claimed his first victory of the BBA mountain bike racing
He completed the 10-lap, 7.5 mile course in 48 minutes, 43 seconds, denying triathlete Neil De Ste Croix victory by more than two minutes. De Ste Croix finished in 51:36 ahead of Rolf Runkel who posted a time of 56:14.
Brian Steinhoff and Peter Matcham took an early lead, but one that was short lived as Steinhoff flatted out before completing lap one, and Matcham, riding a borrowed bike due to an earlier mechanical proplem, punctured twice keeping him well off the pace.
However, as the dust settled, Wing established a lead his competition could not touch, and he won in style.
The novices race was the most hotly contested of the day with Chris Smith, Owen Burgess and Adam Parker battling over six miles.
Smith won in 45:35, and Burgess (45:59) pulled away from Parker (46:04) on the last lap to finish second.
The lone rider in the veterans category, Ian Fox, finished his six-mile time trial in 47:58.
Trovaughn Smith looks set to sweep the series as he completed the six-mile short course in 41:48, winning his 15-16 year category.
James Adams was second in 48:09, Adam Petty, who also suffered a flat tyre, took third in 54:54.
Tyler Abbot clinched victory again in the 13-14 boys group, finishing the six-mile race in 42:41. Geoffrey Smith was runner-up in 45:18 and Khamari Greaves rounded out the top three.
In the 11-12 boys section, Tim Fox, Ricky Souza and Aaron Fenn have been taking turns occupying the top three week to week. This time it was Fox who had the right stuff. After 3.6 miles he was first across the line in 28:47.
Mark Smith and Dominique White duelled for 2.4 miles in the Under-10 category, but by the end it was Smith who prevailed in a time of 26:01. White finished 43 seconds back.
Races six and seven of the nine-race series will be held at Hog Bay Park on Sunday, February 4. The downhill event will start at 8.45 a.m., with the cross country following afterwards.
