Gerhard Blitzes Minors on road to title double
Minors in the final of the men's singles of the Bermuda International Open Badminton Championships on Saturday at BAA Gym.
The Munich native, who was ranked second in the tournament, won convincingly 15-1, 15-5 as Minors himself admitted he was outclassed. "I didn't know his strength,'' Minors said. "I was way outclassed. You don't get to see a player of this calibre often. To hang in and get points off him is a treat.'' According to Minors, Treitinger has played in the All-England championships the past four years and has now retired, at the age of 32, from competitive singles and doubles though he still plays in Division Two in Germany. He is rated Germany's number one doubles player.
Treitinger also won the men's doubles title as he and partner Kim Tan beat Minors and Randy Brangman 15-9, 15-12 in the most exciting final. Minors and Brangman were leading in both games, including by a five-point margin in the second.
Ailsa Campbell beat Claire Norbury 11-3, 11-4 to win the women's singles final and then teammed up with Minors to beat Shonette Wilson and Brangman in the mixed doubles final 15-4, 15-2.
Norbury and Wilson emerged as the women's doubles winners after a 15-3, 15-8 win over British Airways employees Christine Jemmett and Elizabeth Pearce.
Only three teams competed in the women's doubles with the top two teams advancing to the final after round-robin play.
