Gibbons named to select squad
Gibbons has been selected to play for the Birmingham League Conference against the MCC today.
Gibbons will team up with former West Indies Test great Alvin Kallicharran, Anderson Cummins, who was in the West Indies' World Cup team, Zimbabwe captain David Houghton and Asif Muhammad, the Pakistan Under-25 captain who hit 152 not out against Gibbons' Halesowen last week.
The MCC, in its endeavours to assess the development of the minor leagues, play against various select teams and in today's 60-overs contest at Worcester's county ground it will be Gibbons and Co. who have a chance to strut their stuff.
"I'm really looking forward to playing with those guys,'' said Gibbons.
"This is definitely the highlight so far.'' Gibbons continued to show why he is pro at Halesowen with a series of good performances over the week. On Thursday against Muhammad's Sutton Coldfield squad, Gibbons made an unbeaten 79 as Halesowen made 138 for four in reply to 227 for seven declared.
The Bermudian raved over the innings of Muhammad, however. "He was really brilliant,'' he said of the Pakastani who is a nephew of former Test star Mushtaq Muhammad. "He hopes to be in the Test team by this time next year, but from what I saw he should already be there.'' Gibbons returned figures of three for 41 from 14 overs of swing bowling. On Saturday, Gibbons finally got another crack at Cummins, who is the pro for Olton Cricket Club. Cummins made an unbeaten 52 as Olton made 197 and Gibbons was 46 not out as Halesowen held on for the draw at 129 for seven.
Sunday's matches produced Halesowen's third league win and the second since Gibbons arrived. They beat Wednesbury by 60 runs after scoring 165. Gibbons made 34 and then took three for 19 from nine overs.
"It is great playing as a pro,'' Gibbons said. "Just knowing that the rest of the team is depending on me to do well, either to get wickets or make runs.
"When I go to bat I know I'm the pro and I have to play like it.''
