enjoyed excellent victories in the English League Cup third round last night.

Bjarni Gudjonsson scored twice and new signing Rickhardur Dadason netted the other as Second Division Stoke overcame First Division Barnsley 3-2.

Manchester City won an all-Premier League tie against Aston Villa at Villa Park by 1-0, thanks to an 89th-minute penalty by Kevin Horlock.

In the fourth round, Stoke must visit Premier League Liverpool, while Manchester City will be at home to First Division Wimbledon.

Holders Leicester City were thrown out of the League Cup by struggling First Division side Crystal Palace.

Goals from Clinton Morrison, Steve Thomson and Andrejs Rubins gave Palace, battling at the bottom of the First Division, a 3-0 victory over Leicester who are making a serious challenge at the top of the Premier League.

With many of the top clubs involved in Europe, the League Cup does not play an important role in the domestic season for leading sides who sometimes field weakened teams.

Leicester became the fourth side from the top flight to go out of the third round at the hands of First Division sides after Leeds United, Tottenham Hotspur and Middlesbrough lost on Tuesday.

Leeds were beaten by Tranmere Rovers while Tottenham gave a woeful performance at home to Birmingham City. Middlesbrough went out to Wimbledon.

Palace will now meet Tranmere in the next round to be played at the end of November.

Championship challengers Arsenal also went out after a 2-1 defeat at home by promoted Premier League side Ipswich Town. An 89th-minute winner from James Scowcroft sealed the issue against an under-strength Arsenal side.

Ipswich will now take on fellow Premier League Coventry City who needed a dramatic late goal in extra time to win 1-0 at Southampton. John Eustace scored the winner in the 29th minute of extra time.

The most glamorous tie of the night saw Liverpool beat Chelsea 2-1 after extra time at Anfield with a winner from England international striker Robbie Fowler.

Liverpool took the lead with an 11th-minute goal from Danny Murphy before diminutive Italian Gianfranco Zola equalised with a header in the 29th.

Then Fowler fired in a low shot in the 14th minute of extra time to boost his confidence after some disappointing form. Liverpool had striker Emile Heskey sent off for his second bookable offence in the dying seconds.

Newcastle United went through after a dramatic 4-3 defeat of fellow Premier League side Bradford City.

Newcastle went 3-0 ahead in the first 27 minutes with two goals from former England captain Alan Shearer and another from Daniel Cordone.

But Bradford managed to pull back to 3-3 with two goals from Ashley Ward and one from Ian Nolan before a 71st minute effort from Stephen Caldwell put the home side in control again. Newcastle will play Birmingham in the fourth round.

HURDLE LEADS WINDIES TO VICTORY -- BERMUDA BRIEFS RUG Hurdle leads Windies to victory Royal Air Force 12 West Indies 25 Bermuda's Bobby Hurdle was among the try scorers as the West Indies rugby team defeated the Royal Air Force at Barking Rugby Club in England last night.

Hurdle, who was one of five Bermudians involved last night, skippered the Caribbean side to their second victory from three matches on their tour of England, but he had to leave the field with injured ribs 20 minutes before the final whistle.

Jonathan Cassidy, Rob Steinhoff and Josh McGavern were on from the start, while Freedom Burrow entered the fray as a replacement for the last quarter of the match.

On a bitterly cold night, the Air Force made a flying start and were 12-0 ahead by the 25-minute mark.

But they were brought crashing down to earth, as Hurdle's score was added to by further tries from Trinidad duo Alan Fraser and Sean O'Farrell and another from Venezuela's Jamie Waters, who also kicked a conversion and a penalty.

MARSHALL EARNS SALTUS A DRAW SOC Marshall earns Saltus a draw The Saltus school soccer team lost their 100 percent record on their tour of Canada yesterday, but remained unbeaten after a 1-1 draw with Trinity School from just outside Toronto.

Jesse Marshall scored the Saltus goal after 15 minutes but the tourists then failed to make the most of their domination and conceded an equaliser 10 minutes from time. The result gave them a tour record of three wins and one draw.
