when he scored twice in Bristol City's 4-1 home win over Walsall.

Both strikers ended their goal droughts at Ashton Gate, with Lightbourne threatening to make it three straight wins over Goater when he broke the deadlock in the 16th minute with his second goal of the season from a free kick.

But Goater, whose Rotherham team lost to Walsall 1-0 and 3-1 last season, was determined to settle the score and he struck twice in the first half.

That helped ease the strain on manager Joe Jordan who has been under pressure following a string of bad results. Jordan was called before the club's board of directors last week to explain those results.

Goater, whose performance had one English tabloid screaming "Goater is Great'' in its headline after his two classy goals, scored his first in the 29th minute when he volleyed in a Gary Owers cross.

After two fine saves against him by the Walsall goalkeeper James Walker, the Bermudian took his tally to five for the season in the 44th minute after controlling a pass from Brian Tinnion and beating the 'keeper with a low shot.

Further goals in the second half by midfielder Matt Hewlett and Greg Goodridge settled the issue for City as a relieved Jordan punched the air at the final whistle.

Lightbourne was the outstanding player for Walsall and he almost had a second when he charged onto Kevin Wilson's 57th minute pass only to see goalkeeper Stuart Naylor bring off a brave save.

The win keeps City in a comfortable mid-table position while Walsall are third from the bottom of Division Two. Tonight Bristol City travel away to First Division leaders Bolton for the second leg of their Coca Cola Cup second round match. The teams drew 0-0 last week in the first game.

Walsall, meanwhile, meet Wrexham in a league match at home.
