Goater highlights to hit Bermuda
remaining home matches on local television on a week delay basis -- starting with today's fourth-round FA Cup tie against Newcastle United.
Mark Georgevic, a corporate lawyer with Cox and Wilkinson who has provided legal counsel for local sports personalities and helped arrange the trials at Coventry City for Neil Paynter and Philip Clarke, is working with Rotherham and Bermuda striker Shawn Goater to put the package together.
Georgevic has already been in contact with the local television stations and, through Goater, has secured the release of films from the club.
But costs, which include the deal with Rotherham United, shipping of the tape by courier, editing and conversion expenses once they arrive here and air time, would be the main stumbling block and would require involvement from local businesses.
"As a concept I don't think it would be particularly difficult for us to get hold of the tapes that are produced by Rotherham to be couriered here, converted and put on one of the television channels as a fortnightly programme,'' said Georgevic.
"I think a 30-minute programme with 24 or 26 minutes of highlights of Rotherham's games would be viewed by a large cross-section of the residents in Bermuda,'' said Georgevic.
Georgevic thinks Goater's popularity in Bermuda will enable sponsors to be found to help cover the costs, with Goater also prepared to endorse various companies' products.
"Obviously there would be a cost involved but Shawn's performances in the World Cup and for Rotherham this season have created a lot of interest in Bermuda and the UK and it is great for Bermuda to see one of its local boys making good,'' Georgevic added. "He's been referred as the local hero and it's fully justified, I think.
"Shawn is getting a lot of Press coverage in the UK now, which can be seen from the Times article.'' Georgevic, a shareholder of Premier Division side Coventry City, has been in contact with both VSB and Bermuda Broadcasting Company and both are quite interested in the idea, he said.
"Initially VSB, through Kenny DeFontes and their sports department, are willing to produce a pilot programme with a view to attracting interest amongst the residents here and also we're looking for companies to sponsor the conversion, production, editing and air time costs of putting on such a programme, which I think will be an extremely popular programme.
"I don't know what the costs are going to be. At the end of the day Shawn and I will consider any package put forward by VSB and ZBM, provided the necessary funding is behind it.'' The success of Rotherham in the Second Division -- they are fifth in the standings and in the promotion race -- makes the idea all the more attractive.
No doubt Bermudians would be keen to see the talented Goater performing in his club team under typical English conditions.
"We've made an inital approach to Rotherham who are quite interested in the concept,'' Georgevic explained. "Obviously it's promoting Rotherham as well as Shawn Goater and the arrangement will be that we would get a tape sent by courier on Monday, which would hopefully arrive on Thursday and put on television on Monday about 7.30. We feel there would be great interest in that slot and it would be within nine days of the game.
"There are 12 more Rotherham home games and they should be very exciting games as they are high up in the league and are doing very well. We would be looking for 12 more Mondays and obviously the cost would be very much up to VSB or ZBM.'' Georgevic said he thinks Goater has the ability to follow in the footsteps of Clyde Best and succeed at a high level.
"He's only young, he's very talented and with a lot of dedication we may well see him playing at a much higher level and it would be wonderful if we could see him regularly in Bermuda,'' said Georgevic.
For those interested in following Rotherham's progress today against Newcastle they can tune in to BBC 1160 at 10.30 this morning for Sports World.
Goater will be featured in a live interview in the first hour of Shirley Dill's popular Sunday morning talk show on VSB radio (1450) starting at 8.15.
Georgevic will appear on her Sunrise Show on Monday morning at about 7.30 to further promote the highlights idea.
SHAWN GOATER -- Bermuda may see the star forward in a Rotherham strip every fortnight.
