Golf juniors slip up in finals: BERMUDA BRIEF Two Bermudian golfers came up short in the finals of the Canadian Junior Golf Association championships at
Ryan Mello was beaten 4 and 3 by Canadian Christopher Kenney in the boys' 12-15 division while Laura Robinson went down six and five to Canadian Sara Howard in the girls' division.
Although the weather was ideal for the fourth day in a row, the par 71 course proved to be a challenging championship course.
Despite the many hazards on the tough course the five-man Bermuda contingent did well overall, although the Canadian's familiarity of it proved advantageous during the final.
Mello, a six handicapper, was competitive against Kenney, who plays off a four handicap, until they made the turn after nine holes.
At the turn the Canadian took the initiative by winning the next three holes to go three-up. Mello pulled one back on the 13th but that was all he managed as the Canadian soon wrapped it up.
It was a totally different story for Robinson, who was emphatically beaten after her game fell apart once she made a poor tee shot.
Against a formidable opponent such as Howard who plays off a nine handicap, the local player, playing off 16, had difficulty in recovering.
