Gritty 'Gades win tourney
determination to win the Sandys Boat Club tournament at Malabar Field on Saturday.
'Gades beat Teachers 13-3, drew 0-0 with Mariners and then beat Police 14-0 to finish the tournament in first place ahead of former two-time winners Teachers who placed second.
"I'm very happy,'' said first year skipper Mike Gorrie, "especially for the beginning of the season.
"It's just a one-off tournament, but it puts everyone in a good mood especially for the new players this year.
"It was a big victory for our team which was divided equally between first and second team players. I am pleased for them and the club generally.'' Renegades played Teachers in the second game after Mariners made light work of Police 10-0 in the tournament opener with a penalty and a conversion from Keith Hodgkins and a try from Keith Beattie.
Teachers were down 3-0 soon after the match began when Richard Willis kicked a penalty which Kevin Harris equalised soon after.
Des Nash, who won the Amstel Sportsmanship award last season, scored a converted try soon after the interval. Willis was on hand again to put the game out of Teachers' reach with a penalty.
In their second game against Mariners, Renegades battled to a 0-0 draw as neither team could gain an advantage despite strong running from Hodgkins, Beattie and Dave Conway.
Renegades killed off a disorganised Police team 14-0 in their final game of the tournament with tries from Pat Jones and Stevie Everest and two conversions from Willis.
In the other game Teachers beat Police 29-0 with tries from Ashley Redmond (2) Andre Simons, David Cooke and Kevin Harris who also had two conversions.
