weekend.

A power failure in the Vesey Street area of Devonshire meant that Saturday night's meeting had to be held up for an hour and a half.

The lights went out after only the first heat -- making for a very long night for those taking part.

When racing did get underway again the ponies must have been fearing another black-out as race times continued to drop.

Four animals moved on to a faster time bar, while a few others have only one leg out.

Jandy's Desert Storm (Francis DeSilva) was one of those to improve, along with Final Explosion (Arthur Hurst), Rocket Ride (Bobby DeGraffe) and GV Colonel Spence (Inwood Stables).

There were seven double winners including Tuxedo's Bow Tie (Eddie Roque), Tuxedo's Prince (Aaron Sims), El Dreamer (Dal Vasconcelos), Jandy's Desert Storm, Gold Mate (Joe Correira) and L/A Erma Time (David Lopes).

Eddie Roque was the leading driver on the night with four wins. He had two victories with Tuxedo's Bow Tie, including one in the feature race.

The other two winners of the International Fixed Odds Ltd races were Jandy's Desert Storm and Vieda's Laser Beam (Arthur Hurst).

Nick DeCosta drove Grand Shady to the fastest time of the night, covering the half mile in 1:06.1. That time matches Tuxedo Bow Tie's of last week as the swiftest of the season so far.

This week's programme takes place on Friday with post time at 7.00 p.m.

Charles River also share the gross lead with Spring Lake GC of Spring Lake, New Jersey. They each turned in scores of 62.

Defending net champions, Westchester Hills from New Jersey, led by professional Kevin Morris, started with a 62 at Port Royal.

The best of Bermuda's teams were Riddell's Bay and Ocean View, both returning net 61s.

Riddell's Bay, led by Darron Swan, began at Belmont, while Ocean View, led by Bermuda's top pro Dwayne Pearman, started at Mid Ocean Club.

Keith Caines won the 19-and-under title the hard way by being sent to the losers' bracket when he lost 21-14, 14-21 and 23-25 to Shilo Payne.

Caines then defeated Stephan Lee, Saki Tuzo, Nathan Darrell and James Matthews all by 2-0 scores to earn another crack at Payne.
