Heritage classic dare has Wellman in a quandary

date of June 11 will conflict with other track and field meets, including Grand Prix events, scheduled in Europe around the same time.

The Bermuda Olympian, who has not yet been advised of the revised date of the meet by the Bermuda Track and Field Association, was surprised to hear the news when contacted by The Royal Gazette but he still did not rule out fitting it into his schedule.

Wellman fears that there could be a clash with his schedule because he will be in Germany for a meet on June 6 and usually the top athletes are involved in other meets in Europe when they are on that side of the Atlantic.

"I don't know my exact situation right now, but it looks like I would be cutting it close if I am to return home for June 11. Usually when we are over there we compete in a number of other countries as well, '' said the University of Arizona student.

"However, the triple jump is not listed on the Grand Prix schedule this year and I don't exactly know just what will be happening over there.'' Wellman is hoping to concentrate on European circuit in order to build himself up for the World Outdoor Championships in Stuttgart, Germany, in August.

Yesterday Wellman left for California where he will compete in a meet today and on May 19 he will travel to Brazil to participate in an IAAF meet.

According to Wellman, Olympic champion Mike Conley remains interested in the Heritage Classic but much now depends on whether the new day could be fit in to his busy schedule as well.

There is still no word on the the status of Bulgarian Nikolai Raev who tested positive for amphetamines at the world indoor championships in Toronto in February.

Raev placed third in the Toronto SkyDome ahead of Wellman. Though both were deadlocked on 56 feet, eight inches, Raev captured the bronze becasuse his next best jump was better than the Bermudian's.

But he stands to lose the medal to Wellman and be banned for two years if the second back-up test is also positive.
