Herring brothers make their mark in opening event
Clearwater Beach on Saturday.
Jonathon Herring comfortably won the Tri-Gatorade event, while his younger brother Matthew finished fourth overall and won the 13-15 age group.
Jonathon, 18, completed the swim/bike/run event in one hour, six minutes, eight seconds, just over three minutes ahead of his closest challenger, Andrew Davis.
In third place was Richard Bruton (1:09:49), closely followed by 14-year-old Matthew, who clocked a remarkable 1:10:01.
In cool weather with a slight breeze, near perfect race conditions, Karen Smith eased unchallenged to the women's title, finishing nearly seven-and-a-half minutes ahead of 13-year-old Flora Duffy.
In the duathlon, Page Grundmuller and Chris Dickson were the top female and male competitors respectively.
And in the Olympic distance event, Dave Ferguson and Kim Mason took the honours.
In the older Ironkids distance of 200m swim/10K bike/2K run, 13-year-old Dominique Nannette was the most impressive performer, clocking 32:02 to win from Khamari Greaves (33:28).
Caitlin Conyers took the girls' title with a time of 36:43.
In the advanced distance race (300m swim/15K bike/3K run), 13-year-old Tyler Scott was first to cross the line in 47:10.
In the seven-10 age category, 10-year-old Tim Fox came out on top, completing the 100m swim/5K bike/1K run in 17:21, after he fended off a strong run from Ricky Souza (17:33).
The first girl to complete the distance was Alexandra Eaton, who clocked 20:04, chased by nine-year-old Rebecca Sharpe (20:24).
The closest race in the age groups came in the nine-year-old boys, in which Marc Smith beat Dominic White to the line by just one second in a time of 19:04.
Other age category winners were Claire Hawley (eight-year-old girls), Rebecca Sharpe (nine-year-old girls), Ally Bolton (12-year-old girls), Thomas Godfrey (11-year-old boys) and Matthew Godfrey (12-year-olds).
