Hilts halts Garland with a 73

over par 73 -- to take the lead in the 18-21 age group after yesterday's second round of the Atlantic International Junior Championships.

Hilts, a four handicapper, now leads overall first round leader Chris Garland and Steven Carruthers, both of Bermuda, by one shot after Garland, in the 15-17 age group, could only add a disappointing 80 to his opening round 71.

Carruthers, in the same age group, did a little better with his 79 which puts him on 151 with Garland. Hilts has 150 and leads Jebb Nucci of Canada by six shots with Bermuda's Jimmy Legere a further shot back.

Jon Boland closed the gap on joint leaders Garland and Carruthers in their age group after his fine round of 77 at the tough Mid Ocean layout which leaves him four shots behind.

In the girls open section Leslie Walsh increased her lead by firing an 86 to open an incredible 32-stroke lead over Lynn Fletcher of Canada after just two rounds.

Quinton Sherlock of Bermuda matched Craig Brown's opening day 78 with a good round of 78 himself yesterday to take over the lead in the boys 13-14 age group by five strokes over Brown. Robert Spurling (167), Andy Moan (167) and Michael Sims (168), are all within striking distance with two rounds still to play. Brown shot an 88 yesterday while Spurling had an 85, Moan an 84 and Sims an 83.

Justin Barritt continued to pull away in the 11-12 group and now leads Keno Turnquest of the Bahamas by 22 shots. Barritt carded an 84 yesterday to go with his first-round 81. Turnquest shot a 96.

The third round will be held today at Port Royal.
