Home crowd spurs injured Wadson on
she competed in the Bermuda Triangle Challenge last night.
The adrenalin generated by showing off her talents in front of a home crowd at the Southampton Princess overwhelmed any feelings of discomfort from her strapped-up right wrist.
Representing the Island team against gymnasts from seven strong American teams, Wadson scored a total of 32.525 points in her four disciplines to take fourth place overall in the Senior Level Nine individual rankings.
Wadson, who turned 18 two weeks ago, said: "I woke up one morning and my wrist hurt and it just got worse and worse.
"I haven't been able to train properly since last week, but I couldn't feel any pain from it tonight -- I was just so excited.
"It's great fun to compete at home, with so many people you know watching you.'' Despite the tissue damage which is thought to be the cause of her injury, Wadson should be fit to continue in the last phase of competition in the meet tomorrow morning.
The top Bermuda points scorer of the night was 12-year-old Maria Darby, who clocked up 33.425 points to take fourth place in Level Nine Junior category.
Christina White also turned in a fine performance, scoring 32.825 points to take third place in the Level Nine Seniors.
But Bermuda coach Walid Mustafa felt his own star of the night was 12-year-old Alex Froncioni.
"She was the one who performed closest to her potential. She did everything I asked,'' said the coach.
"On the floor, she scored 8.75 -- that's her all-time best -- and it was watered-down, so it wouldn't be too difficult for her.'' Froncioni also scored 8.725 on the vault, 7.5 on the uneven bars and 7.6 in the beam exercise, despite taking a fall.
Froncioni said the team's recent triumph at the Gym-Beez Invitational in Philadelphia had given the girls confidence.
"That was great and I think we all learned from it,'' she said. "It really pumped us up for this and it was great competing in front of so many family and friends.'' Buckeye won the opening night team competition, with Fairland second and Gym-Beez third.
But Bermuda managed third place in the Level Nine team competiton, their three best scores totalling 99.6 points, behind Atlantic (102.825) and Aiken (108.9).
Nicole Kasson, of Fairland, took the open individual award, with her remarkable score of 37.075. Aiken's Claire Fox was top of the Level Nine junior ranks with 36.175.
The third Triangle Challenge continues this morning, with Level Eight competition starting at 10 a.m. And this afternoon, the youngest gymnasts, some of whom will be making their competitive debuts, will get their share of the limelight in the recreational occupation division.
