Hong Kong and Bermuda riding high
could have their hands full.
That is with the knowledge of Hong Kong producing the first shock result on the third day of the ICC Trophy Tournament yesterday.
Hong Kong defeated Denmark in a match spread over two days when they finished level on 192 runs but were awarded the win after losing fewer wickets.
It is an unchanged team that will take to the field today at Nairobi Jaffery as Bermuda hope to widen their group D lead which at present is merely on run rate over Hong Kong.
The only previous meeting between the teams was in 1986 when Noel Gibbons slammed 125 not out as Bermuda amassed 405 for eight, then the all-time best ICC score. Hong Kong were beaten quite convincingly, but it is obvious they have improved considerably since then and warrant more respect.
"Hong Kong are definitely a different team,'' team manager McDonald Swan said. "I am made to understand that they have a lot of English players. A victory here would put us in the driver's seat in the group.'' Swan said that the Bermuda players are in high spirits following Sunday's opening win over West Africa.
He added: "Their confidence is very high and they are looking forward to this match.'' A fine all-round performance saw West Africa, comprised of players from Nigeria, Ghana, Sierre Leone and Gambia, dismissed for 93 in 46.5 overs.
Anthony Edwards, Terry Burgess and Bruce Perinchief each claimed two wickets while Noel Gibbons and Clevie Wade were also economical in taking a wicket apiece.
The batting was dominated by Dexter Smith who struck a half-century (54 not out) in his debut ICC innings.
Bermuda can expect a stiffer examination today but are confident in the knowledge that they have already played a friendly at Nairobi Jaffery where Albert Steede and Clay Smith both scored centuries.
Elsewhere in the group Denmark take on Fiji, needing a victory to keep their chances of a quarter-final place alive after yesterday's upset.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bangladesh completed two-day victories over East and Central Africa and Argentina respectively while top seeds Holland, third-seeded hosts Kenya and Canada who, initially frustrated by the rain, settled their matches in quick time.
Holland dismissed Gibraltar for 80 and passed the score having lost just one wicket while Canada lost one wicket after skittling out Namibia for 51.
The match in group A between Ireland and Papua New Guinea was halted by late rain and will be completed today. Today's other matches are in group D where UAE take on the United States in the first match between two evenly-balanced teams and Bangladesh meet East and Central Africa.
Bermuda team for today (in batting order): Dexter Smith, Albert Steede (captain), Clay Smith, Charlie Marshall, Arnold Manders, Noel Gibbons, Clevie Wade, Dean Minors, Anthony Edwards, Terry Burgess, Bruce Perinchief. Reserve: Quinton Burch.
