Soccer star David Bascome is set for crunch talks with Harrisburg Heat in the summer.

The Bermudian, who plays in the US National Professional Soccer League for the Pennsylvanian side, has one more year left on his contract and is in no hurry to pack his bags and move on.

But Bascome says the club must prove that its ambitions mirror his own, otherwise he may be forced to look elsewhere.

"I have one more year left, but I guess they will be talking to me at the end of this season and try to get me to stay on longer,'' he said.

"It just depends on what the club is looking to do. I know right now the club is looking to win a championship but I need to see that by watching the players who come in.

"If they are not willing to bring in good players then it is going to be tough for me to stay. But right now I'm just trying to play this season out and see how things pan out at the end of it.'' Bascome said the ball was firmly in the club's court.

"Next year is like an option. They have the option to agree on whatever I ask for. It's up to them as to what they want to do. But I think after this season they are going to want to talk because of the season I am having,'' he said.

"I would think we will be talking about the middle of the year. It's going to be interesting because they know the value I bring to the club and it's just up to them. A lot of clubs would gladly take me, it's just a matter of whether the Heat are willing to put the numbers forward.'' For the moment Bascome is putting contract talks to the back of his mind and concentrating on his game.

The Heat are third in the American League just behind Baltimore and leaders Philadelphia and have an 11 and seven record.

"Everything is going well. We won our last game on Saturday against Baltimore. They are in first place so that was a good win for us,'' Bascome said.

"We have the third best record out of both leagues so we are doing much better than last year.'' They have two games this weekend against Cleveland and Buffalo, both below the Heat in their division.

"We have 22 regular season games left. We are taking one game at a time and trying to stick with it,'' Bascome said. "We are trying to win as many of our away games as we can so we can get a good standing in the play-offs.

"The biggest thing is going to be home field advantage. The first two rounds are the best of three, so we have to make sure we have good home field advantage.'' Bascome said as far as his game was concerned things couldn't be better.

"Personally, things are going great. It's been one of my best seasons. I have got 30 goals right now and am fourth in league,'' he said.

Bascome weighs up his options From Page 13 "I have been trying to hit a lot of milestones this year and my biggest target right now is to try to do what I can to help the team win.'' To be real contenders, Bascome believes the club needs to add one or two players in key areas.

"We have enough offensive power and defensively we are starting to get strong. But I think we need to bring in a good midfield player and maybe a good strong back-up goalkeeper,'' he said.

"I know that back-up goalkeepers are tough to find but right now the team is doing very well and so to add one or two players before the season ends to get ready for the play-offs is going to be important.'' Asked whether he had any ambitions to play the outdoor version of the sport, Bascome said: "This is it. I run my business during the summer. I have accepted that it is a rolling ball, so no matter whether it's indoor or outdoor I'm playing soccer.

"I'm 30-years-old right now and I would rather stay with what is putting food on the table and also it gives me a chance to come back home and work with the kids and do other things outside the game.''
