Inquiry into BFA election complete

climax with a special committee ready to present their findings into the disputed re-election of President Neville Tyrrell.

Tyrrell's victory over challenger Mark Trott at the BFA's Annual General Meeting in July sparked a storm of controversy, with affiliates split as to whether the election process was legitimate.

The dispute centred on whether honorary Vice-President Eugene Blakeney should have been allowed to preside over the meeting and cast the deciding vote when the count stood at 12-all.

That vote went in favour of Tyrrell, although subsequent protests resulted in the matter going to arbitration.

Austin Woods, chairman of the special committee entrusted with looking into whether the procedure was lawful, said he and his colleagues had finished their work.

"A special committee set up by the BFA asked the honorary Vice-Presidents to meet to arbitrate on this issue. We were given specific instructions and that was basically to see if the constitution was adhered to in terms of election of officers,'' he said.

Woods said the matter was delayed because the minutes of the AGM -- crucial in determining whether the election was legal -- were not available.

"We met on October 31 and we discussed it and we were missing some information which we got when the Secretary General returned last Monday,'' he said.

With all the information at hand Woods said the process was completed and the final straight was now in sight.

"We have written our summation (and placed it) in a sealed envelope which will be presented to the Special General Meeting whenever the BFA calls that,'' he said.

Asked what conclusions the committee had come to, Woods said: "I cannot disclose any of that information until it has been presented to the affiliates.

"I would think that if it will be made public it will be done so by the BFA or the special committee.'' Woods said he was also unable to say when the special meeting to discuss the findings would be held.

"I checked today to find out, because of my schedule, when that meeting will be held but I understand that both the Secretary General and the President are off the Island,'' he said.
