Irvine penalty rescues
BAA Wanderers hooked up in a fierce Commercial Division Group A battle that ultimately ended in a 4-4 draw.
In what was a crowd-pleasing affair, the pendulum swayed back and forth as BAA enjoyed the initial advantage, only to have Hood come back and almost snatch two points.
Half a minute had passed when the home side burst into the lead as Eric Jones put one home.
Not yet recovered from that early stunner, Hood were further set back by another Jones strike minutes later and it appeared there might be a BAA goal rush.
Painstakingly, however, the visitors clawed their way back into the match as Colin Alexander and Des Minors each scored to draw them level by the half.
Minors tallied again in the second half to put Hood ahead 3-2 before an own goal by Colin McQueen allowed BAA to equalise.
Drama set in as Minors again spurred Hood into a lead and as the seconds ticked away it appeared Wanderers would fall to their first loss of the season.
But, some eight minutes into injury time, BAA's saving grace came as they were awarded a disputed penalty and Steve Irvine slotted the ball home to save their blushes.
Taking advantage of the slip by the leaders, Spinning Wheel closed to within three points of the top spot and into sole possession of second place through a workmanlike 2-1 triumph over KPMG Peat Marwick.
Allan Fray and Keith Bell staked Wheel to a 2-0 half-time advantage and although KPMG came back with a second-half reply by John Ingham the equaliser proved most elusive.
A barn-burner ensued at White Hill field between mid-table clubs Forties and Somerset Extros.
Goals reigned in during the opening half as five were scored, resulting in Forties holding a 3-2 half-time edge.
The second half was not nearly as productive, but Extros did manage to find an equaliser to preserve a share of the spoils.
Derek Patience, Derek Scott and Andy Robinson scored for Forties while Glen Riley, Dwaine Richardson and an own goal accounted for Extros' scoring.
Another closely-fought affair had Exiles remain anchored to the bottom of the tables after drawing 2-2 with Island Rangers.
Mike Cook and Antoine Cannonier scored in the first half for Exiles and Blaine Outerbridge once for Rangers as the former led 2-1 at the break.
Troy Berkeley equalised in the second half to seal the draw.
In group B action, Lobster Pot benefitted from four goals off the boot of Tony Smith and one from Patrick Stone, which offset two goals by Fire Service's Steven Caines, allowing the former a 5-2 victory.
Meanwhile, Genesis drew 1-1 with Park United.
Hasan Durham notched a goal for Genesis and Tony Anthony equalised. United's Sinclair Trott also had a penalty superbly saved by goalkeeper Theodore Morgan.
Devonshire Colts All-Stars outlasted St. George's All-Stars 3-1 to move into possession of the league leadership via goal difference.
Colin Zuill, Steven Furbert and Larry Benjamin notched scores for the winners, while Cal Rayner got a consolation tally for the losers.
North Village Rams lost an opportunity to improve their strike rate when Prison Officers failed to show for their scheduled match.
Dandy Town moved level on points with idle North Village in the Alliance Division Group A, courtesy of a 4-1 demolition of Devonshire Colts.
Paul Cann (two), Jeffrey Butterfield and Darren Simons scored for Town and Kenny Dill for Colts.
PHC, likewise, beat St. George's 4-1 as Raynell Lightbourne, Ottis Steede, Ty Williams and Mike Jarrett all tallied. Melvin Simmons pulled one back for the east-enders.
Another goalfest ensued between Hamilton Parish and Somerset with the former emerging 6-3 victors.
Ernest Lathan garnered four goals for Parish, assisted by Chris Caisey (penalty) and Antwon Darrell. Richard Scott (two) and Anthony Burchall replied for Somerset.
In Group B play, Southampton defeated Somerset Eagles 6-3 on goals from Anthony Stoneham, Mike Higgs, G.Steede (two) and J.Burgess (two), while Stephen Smith (two) and Dion Minors were on the mark for Eagles.
Cougars downed BAA 6-0 and St. David's held off Prospect 4-3 in other matches.
