Island looking to build on first win

Evans' doubles victory against Bolivia yesterday when they play Honduras in a relegation crunch match today.

Mallory and Evans raised their arms and embraced after completing their triumph in four sets.

Defeat today would mean a bottom-two placing in the eight-nation tournament and relegation to Group Four, from which Bermuda were promoted last year.

If they win today, captain Steve Bean's team will play off for fifth and sixth place on Sunday -- if they lose they will play for seventh and eight place tomorrow.

Mallory, the Island's most experienced Davis Cup player, said after coming off court: "I think this win will really pump everybody up for the Honduras match and particularly James Collieson, who's lost two very close matches.

"It's great to win one after losing two tight doubles matches with Jensen Bascome against Cuba and Jamaica.

"I thought we could easily have beaten Bolivia today. James had a really close singles singles match, but he didn't stay mentally tough and if he had done, he could have won it.'' Mallory and Evans, both 35, were worthy winners over two opponents more than a decade younger.

But he said: "I'm glad we took that fourth set, because I was getting pretty tired. This level of tennis takes so much out of you, physically and mentally.'' Evans declined to comment after the match.
