Island sailors setting the pace
of racing in International Race Week in the Great Sound.
While Paula Lewin dropped out of first place in the Etchells class, Harry Powell took over top spot in the IOD class after four races. Rudy Bailey leads the Comets after two races, Malcolm Smith the Lasers, also after four races, while Stevie Dickinson holds down second overall in the Snipes after two races.
Ninety degree wind shifts hurt Lewin's chance of holding onto first place in the Etchells as another Bermudian helped push her into second.
Lewin was well placed in the day's only race when the wind shifts forced that event to be scrapped. When the race was restarted Lewin could only manage a fifth place finish and now trails yesterday's winner and new overall leader Scott Moore of the United States by three points.
Top local sailor Peter Bromby was a crew on Moore's boat. Another local, Paul Fisher, placed second among the 16 boats. Moore has two-and-three-quarter points from two races and Lewin five-and-three-quarter points. Henry Spingler of Newport, Rhode Island is third on 10 points.
Powell moved into a slim half-point lead in the IOD class over Urban Ristorp of Sweden. Powell has 14 points and Ristorp 141 . John Petteroed of Norway is third on 163 points.
In yesterday's two races, Rick Bisgyer of Atlanta was first in the first race and Bermuda's Craig Davis second. In the second race, Petteroed took line honours with Bruce Dyson of Marblehead, Massachusetts second.
Defending Laser champion, Malcolm Smith, is first overall after four races following a first and second yesterday to go with two firsts on Sunday. Smith has a commanding 101 point lead over another local sailor, Christian Luthi, who had a seventh and first yesterday. Husband and wife Brett and Sara Wright are tied for third on 22 points.
Rudy Bailey leads the Comets after two races after winning both races yesterday. Mark Garriga of New Jersey was second in the first race and Mark Hess of Westerville, Ohio, a frequent Bermuda visitor, second in the second race. Bailey has 11 points while Garriga is tied on six points with Howard Simmons of Bermuda.
Dickinson is in contention in the Snipes after yesterday's two races, winning the second to sit second overall on four-and-three-quarter points, two behind Don Bedford of San Diego who won the opening race and was second in the second.
Lee Griffith, second to Bedford in the first race, is third overall on seven points. Griffith, from Yardley, Pennsylvania, is the defending champion and commodore of the Snipe Class in the US.
In the other class, Stuart Jardine of England leads the J24s on nine-and-three-quarter points after four races. Frank Keesling of Denver, Colorado is second on 101 points and Peter Allen of Toronto third on 13 points.
