Island soccer players head for college
soccer teams at Thomas College in Waterville, Maine.
Aljame Zuill, Dyke Lawrence, Jahma Charles and Dennis Zuill will play on the men's team while Erika Russell joins the college women's squad.
Aljame Zuill has played for Bermuda's Under-14, Under-16 and Under-19 national teams and is expected to be a key member of the Waterville squad.
Lawrence, meanwhile, received the best goalkeeper award during the Lanzera Cup Under-19 tournament this year as well as the Most Valuable Player award for the 1992-93 season.
Charles was captain of soccer at Warwick Secondary School and has also played for PHC. He was picked for the West All-Star team.
Dennis Zuill is a former Under-17 national team captain and was chosen for the 1995 High School All-Star match. He has been named MVP on several occasions and was named best defender in the Lanzera Cup.
Russell captained Berkeley Institute's netball, basketball and volleyball teams. She won the physical education award in 1994, scholar athlete award and bronze and silver medals in track and field at the East Coast Invitational track meet in Baltimore.
The teenager has also been awarded the Michael and Cindy Simmons Scholarship, valued at over $20,000, for her academic achievements.
BOWLING BOW The Fishbowl Bowling League began their 1995/96 season with a turn-out of 14 teams last weekend.
And it was Wahoo and Cow Pollies who led the competition with maximum points each.
Wahoo thumped Marlins 4-0 with series of 1026, 1080 and 993 compared to Marlins' 1011, 1014 and 967. Doug Hines set the pace with a 707 scratch series and games of 245, 236, and 226 to claim top honours for the evening.
Team-mate Richard Davidge supported the cause with third series of 537.
Marlins' Clem Lespere bowled second series of 558 and Marj Correia bowled ladies' third series of 519.
Cow Pollies also won all four points from Porgies, Barbara Smith bowling a 538, the ladies second high series.
Angel Fish and Mackerels' encounter resulted in a 3-1 victory for Angel Fish with Kent Philips rolling a 674 handicap series.
Tuna came out ahead of Hinds 3-1, led by Marie Frith Richardson's 210 ladies high game.
Snappers were led by Ann Mitchell's high ladies series of 540 while David Wright of Piranhas bowled 532 as the teams settled for a 2-2 draw.
Barracuda defeated Rockfish 3-1 and Dolphins drew 2- 2 with Goldfish.
ROAD RUNNING RUN Bermuda's second road race of the new season is slated for tomorrow with an evening start at 5.00 in Hamilton.
The annual Romanoff 5K gets underway on Church Street, following a loop course which will take runners onto Court Street, west along Front Street to Pitt's Bay Road, right onto St. John's Road, into Woodlands Road, Par La Ville Road and back onto Church Street.
Entries closed yesterday but late entries will be accepted up until 4.45 p.m.
tomorrow at an increased fee of $12.
A separate event for walkers over the same route will be held in conjunction with the race.
SOCCER SOC Bermuda Football Association's twice-postponed annual general meeting has been rescheduled for Social Club on September 18, starting at 7.30 p.m.
