Jamaicans give youngsters chance to shine in Bermuda

The absence of some nine players because of contractual obligations in England will pave the way for a number of promising Jamaican youngsters to gain exposure and experience during that country's six-match tour of Bermuda which starts next weekend.

Test players Jimmy Adams (injured) and Courtney Walsh (resting) are unavailable after the gruelling tour of England while the team has also been robbed of several other established players who have contracts with league clubs in England.

They include spinner Nehemiah Perry and fast bowler Franklyn Rose, both of whom were here with the West Indies A team in 1993, all-rounders Robert Haynes and Larry Williams and fast bowlers Frederick Redwood and Jonathan Grant.

Even so the team, which flies in on September 8, has an interesting blend of youth and experience, the players ranging in age from 18 to 33 with an average age of just 20.

There are six teenagers in the squad, most of whom were part of the Jamaican team which won the recent Northern Telecom Youth Tournament in Grenada.

Among them is Gareth Breese (19), captain of both the Jamaican youth team and the West Indies Youth team which will tour Pakistan in November-December.

Breese is a right-hand batsman and off-break bowler.

Wavell Hinds, who is also a member of that youth team and who was the leading run-getter in the Northern Telecom tournament will put his promising talents on display as will Ray Stewart who scored a century in that same tournament.

Two other players who will go on the Pakistan tour are O'Neil Richards and Denville McKenzie, both 19, and outstanding fast bowling prospects for the future.

Batsmen Delroy Morgan and Robert Samuels, both of whom have visited Bermuda before, will lead the 14-member Jamaican squad. Opener Wayne Lewis is the veteran of the team.

Morgan, 27, will captain the team in the absence of their Test stars. He led Jamaica in the limited overs tournament this year, the Shell/Sandals Trophy, after Haynes had captained the team in the Red Stripe Cup. He is no stranger to Bermuda, having played a few league matches with Bailey's Bay some years ago.

Neither is Samuels who was here with the West Indies A team two years ago.

"We have a veteran opening pair in captain Morgan and (Wayne) Lewis who has been around quite a while, as well as Robert Samuels who is almost a West Indies player and Anthony Andrews,'' said Chief Executive Officer of the Jamaican Cricket Association, George Prescott.

Lewis, at 33, is the oldest member of the team and will lend his experience at the top of the batting order, along with Morgan and Samuels. One of the young batsmen to watch will be Mario Ventura, 22. He is a left-hander who will likely bat at number three or four.

Another left-hander is Hinds who opens for Jamaica at youth level and will likely get some exposure at that position while in Bermuda.

Prescott also mentioned 20-year-old wicketkeeper Andre Coley as another player of the future. "He's more than likely going to be the wicketkeeper for the Jamaica team this year,'' said Prescott.

"The reason why he wasn't there last time was because he was committed to the youth team.'' Jamaica have produced a string of outstanding fast bowlers over the years, but there is also a leg-break and googly bowler trying to make his mark, 22-year-old Brian Murphy.

Jamaica will open their tour on Saturday, September 9 against the Somerset Cup Match Select at Somerset. The following day they take on the BCBC President's XI at the same ground.

Southampton Rangers will host match number three on Tuesday, September 12 when the Bermuda Youth team play the Jamaicans, while league champions Western Stars will take on the tourists on Thursday, September 14 at White Hill Field.

The tour will end the following Saturday and Sunday with matches against St.

George's and Bermuda at Wellington Oval and Lord's. All matches will be 50 overs starting at 11 a.m.

Jamaican team: Delroy Morgan (27) capt, Robert Samuels (24), Gareth Breese (19), Mario Ventura (22), Wayne Cuff (18), Wavell Hinds (18), Brian Murphy (22), Ray Stewart (19), Denville McKenzie (19), O'Neil Richards (19), Anthony Andrews (26), Marlon Gibbs (23), Wayne Lewis (33), Adre Coley (20).
