Jean and Dolly stay on course

the championship flight of the 62nd Bermuda Ladies Amateur Championships at Mid Ocean Club, after they eliminated Shirley Wildi and Diana Diel in yesterday's opening round.

In the two all-Bermuda matches Mylrea beat Wildi four and three while Diel lostn one-up to local dentist Dolly Winwick in the closest match of the day.

Mylrea takes on Bonnie Tyler in a quarter-final round matchup today starting at 9.22. Yesterday Tyler was taken to the 17th before disposing of a stubborn Lynn Brockelman two and one.

The three American pre-tournament favourites, defending champion Reggie Hawes, Lisa Griffin and Lee Ann Vogel were convincing winners in yesterday's first round.

Two-time champion Hawes, who beat Kim Marshall in last year's final, needed just 10 holes to dispose of Rosalie Catlin nine and eight and begin her march to yet another final. Medallist Griffin, who went down to Hawes in the semi final last year, also had a relatively easy time yesterday as she went only a couple of holes further to beat Karen Gallin eight and six. Vogel, the other semi finalist last year, stopped Carolyn Standel five and four in another relatively easy win.

Today Hawes takes on Sally Newi, who had the seventh best medal score on Monday. Newi beat Helen Stovell three and two in her opening match yesterday.

Griffin will take on Dolly Winwick today, while Vogel plays Hannah Steel who beat Lyn Cook three and two. Assuming they win their matches today Griffin and Vogel are set for a semi final meeting tomorrow with Hawes, if she beats Newi today, taking on either Tyler or Mylrea in the other semi-final.

"I'm just taking one round at a time,'' said Mylrea, last year's consolation winner. "Bonnie Tyler is an excellent player. It was very windy out there today and it gave the girls a good test. We played from the white tees. The course is in excellent shape, no problems there.'' Mylrea was last year's consolation winner.

Jean Mylrea -- through to last eight.
