Jennings double sends Village top
Two late goals by defender Kentoine Jennings broke the stubborn resistance of 10-man Colts at Bernard Park yesterday and put Village on top of the Premier Division.
Village dominated the game, especially after the 32nd-minute dismissal of Colts' Jamal Simmons for handling a goalbound Kentoine Jennings header on his own goal-line.
From the resulting penalty, Neil (Diamond) Robinson's shot was saved by Kevin Bean and Robinson then shot wide from the rebound.
And it was not until 13 minutes from time that the Red Devils finally broke through to score and they clinched the points which moved them two points clear of PHC at the top with another immaculate finish by Jennings six minutes later.
Apart from that, Bean was rarely troubled in a goalless first half.
After the break, Village concentrated on exploiting the space vacated by Simmons on the left side of the Colts defence and crosses repeatedly rained in from the right wing.
From one such ball from Nailon Dill, Elliott Jennings found Dwight Warren, who fed Robinson, but he miscued his shot badly from eight yards out.
Bean made a fine save to keep out Warren's shot after a Kevin Jennings cross in the 62nd minute and two minutes later Lamont Simmons' header flew just wide of Colts' goal.
Village goalkeeper Zane Hendrickson was stretchered off in the 72nd minute after an accidental collision with Colts striker Tito Smith, and Gladwin Edness took over bewteen the posts.
A move started and finished by Kentoine Jennings provided the breakthrough for Village in the 77th minute.
Jennings brought the ball out of defence and into the Colts half, before finding freeing Kevin Jennings on the right with a glorious pass. The winger fed Lamont Simmons, whose close-range shot was parried away by Bean, but Jennings lashed the rebound into the bottom left-hand corner.
Warren brought another fine save out of Bean in the 82nd minute with a fierce right-foot strike after a one-two with Robinson, but Village had to wait only one more minute for the goal which finally killed off Colts.
It was ingeniously created by Michael Hansey, who chipped a free kick 30 yards from goal to the unmarked Kentoine Jennings, giving the defender time to chest down and drive past Bean.
