Juniors put in focus
events, including the first-ever Junior Championships. In the process the BTA will be putting together a squad which will represent Bermuda at the World Championships in Manchester, England, on August 22, hoping to follow up on Bermuda's successful showing at the Worlds in Muskoka, Ontario, last year.
The Ironkids competition is the inaugural event of the summer programme and a pair of age groups, seven to 10 years and 11 to 14, will participate in three events at the US Naval Air Station in St. David's beginning at 9 a.m. Youths in the first category will test their endurance in a 100-metre swim, a two-and-a-half mile cycle and a half-mile road run. Youths in the 11-14 age group will participate in a 200-metre swim, five-mile cycle and a one-mile run.
The following day, on June 13, will see the Duathlon competition, open to all adults also at the USNAS beginning at 9 a.m. The events will include a five-kilometre run and 30-K cycle race.
The debut of the Junior National Triathlon championships takes place on July 4 at 8.30 a.m. at the USNAS. Three events -- 600-metre swim, 10-mile cycle and three-mile run -- will feature boys and girls in three age categories, 13-14 years, 15-16 years and 17-18 years.
Interested participants are encouraged to obtain entry forms from their physical education teachers or they can contact Pam Froud (293-4378) or Mary Hopkins (238-3027).
The Nationals takes place a week later on July 4 at the Southampton Naval Annex, open to all adults with events including a 1500-metre swim race, 40-K cycle and 10-K run.
Also open to all adults will be the Short Course event on September 5 at the Southampton Naval Annex. An 800-metre swim, 15-mile cycle race and 5-K run is on the schedule.
The Bermuda Triathlon team competition is scheduled for September 26, also open to all adults with athletes participating in a one-mile swim race, 15-mile cycle and 10-K run.
The seventh and final event, the individual event will close out the schedule, also at the Southampton Naval Annex.
