Khari saves the day for Wolves

Teenager Khari Sharrieff hammered home a late equaliser to prevent Daihatsu Second Division leaders Devonshire Cougars from taking both points in yesterday's eagerly-awaited clash at Devonshire Rec. field.

Just when a victory seemed inevitable for Cougars, Sharrieff struck with only six minutes remaining in the game.

The young forward gained possession of a short corner kick by Dion Wainwright and then advanced a few yards inside the penalty box before unleashing a hard drive from an angle on the left that somehow sailed through a mass of players and into the goal.

It not only floored Cougars but the vociferous fans of the home team were also quietened by the late equaliser. These same fans could only watch in dismay as Sharrieff raced the length of the field in their direction and raised his hands in triumph.

Earlier, though, Wolves were themselves rocked when veteran midfield player Dale Russell gave Cougars a 1-0 lead with a stunning goal after 40 minutes.

Russell took possession of a ball from Devon Brangman and after being allowed to tee up he fiercely struck it home from the edge of the area.

The goal came after Wolves' goalkeeper Andre Smith was taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg. Cougars midfielder Donald Norford also opted for professional medical attention and rode the ambulance to hospital after sustaining a leg injury.

But a hospital check late last night revealed that neither injury was severe and both players were later released.

Albert Thomas proved to be a worthy replacement for Smith.

The new Wolves goalkeeper did well to safely hold on to a header by centre-half Darrid Durrant after 60 minutes and followed this up with a brilliant save from a blast by Clevie Campbell after 75 minutes. Wolves remained competitive with centre-halves Troy Dean and Dean Pitt playing as solid as ever while Marlon Lindsay was a threat up front during counter-attacks.

Cougars lost some of their edge near the end and allowed Wolves to advance deep in their half. Wolves forced six corners within a span of 10 minutes with the game 78 minutes old and that deserved equaliser eventually came when young Sharrieff struck.

Ham. Parish 1, Port Royal 0 Antwon Darrell's 23rd-minute goal stood as the winner as home team Hamilton Parish picked up their first win since the opening day of the season at Wellington Oval.

The margin would have been bigger had Chris Caisey not missed from the penalty spot in the 88th minute.

The penalty was awarded after Quinn Outerbridge was sandwiched by two Port Royal players as he got inside the penalty area. However, the good work came to nought when Caisey's spot-kick was hit weakly and goalkeeper Paul Hayward went to his right to save.

Port Royal's Duarte Lima was taken to hospital by ambulance with a serious knee injury in the early minutes of the match.

The win lifts Parish ahead of Port Royal in the bottom half of the standings.

Somerset Eagles 6, Paget 1 Bottom team Paget took the lead in the 12th minute through Ivan Trott from the penalty spot, but their joy did not last long as Eagles hit back to win convincingly at White Hill field.

Gladstone Wade led the goal rush with a hat-trick after equalising in the 14th minute and scoring again in the 33rd minute and nine minutes from the end for the team's final goal.

Eagles led comfortably 4-1 at the half with Everett Wellman and Terrence Christopher scoring in the 19th and 38th minutes before Dion Minors made it 5-1 in the 73rd minute.

BAA 2, Prospect 1 BAA gained a point on the leaders with a hard-fought win over Prospect at BAA field.

Michael Scott opened the scoring for BAA in the 25th minute and the margin was doubled by Paul Franco after 52 minutes as he followed up, tapping in a rebound of a shot by Wayne DeSilva.

Robert Goodchild pulled one back 11 minutes later with a header from Andrew Rollins' left-wing cross.

TAKE THAT -- Khari Sharrieff is jubilant after scoring Wolves' late equaliser against Second Division leaders Devonshire Cougars.
