Kim chipping in at wake forst

three-round total of 18-over-par 234 to help her college, Wake Forest, win the Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational in Winter Springs, Florida.

Marshall tied with team-mate, Kim Tyrer, after rounds of 78, 75 and 81 and followed that up by finishing in a tie for 39th with another Wake Forest freshman, Victoria Boyson, as the school placed sixth in the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Classic in Austin, Texas.

The school continued its fine spring season form when they rose to a third-place finish in the Lady Gamecock Classic recently as Marshall was again involved, this time finishing in a tie for 25th for the three-round tournament in Columbia, South Carolina. All three courses were par-72 and in each case 18 teams competed.

Stephanie Neill was the school's most consistent performer during those three tournaments, finishing first in the Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational, ninth in the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Classic and third in the Lady Gamecock Classic.

Neill, a sophomore, was voted a second team All-American last year and up to the 17 tournaments she played for the college recently, she has been the Deacons' top finisher every time.

Wake Forest have returned to the top 20 (20th position) in the Golfweek/Taylor Made Collegiate Rankings. They check in at 19th in the Women's National Golf Coaches Association poll.

The form of the team for the three tournaments is a complete turnaround from the fall season when they dropped out of the top 25 despite starting the year ranked in most of the pre-season polls.

Two teams share the lead after the first day of the ninth Ladies Invitation Tournament for the Arton Trophy at Mid Ocean Club after net rounds of 64.

Bea Williams of Bermuda and Brenda Helmer of South Carolina and local Carol Hammond and Diana Ross-Ross of Ontario, Canada, are two strokes ahead of Judy Kitson of Bermuda and Maisie Barlow of Pennsylvania.

Three strokes separate the top six teams as three teams are a further stroke back on 67. They are Bermuda's Sally Madden and her partner Barbara Bennett of Florida, Zita Legere and Patricia Sheehan of Massachusetts and Susan Harlong and Deborah Brucker of Connecticut and New Jersey.

In the gross division, Shirley Wildi of Bermuda and Frankie Stearns of New York shot an opening day 75 to lead by a single stroke over Kitson and Barlow and Bermuda's Diana Diel and Karen Oldham of Ohio.

The Bermuda Junior Golf Association's 11th annual Glidden Bowl, sponsored by the Pembroke Paint Company, began yesterday at Belmont Golf Club with Chris Garland leading the over-15 age group by two strokes.

Garland shot a 78 to take an opening day lead in the 54-hole tournament with Jamie Nelmes just back on 80. With the next player, Craig Brown, a distant seven strokes out of second place the title looks like being decided between Garland and Nelmes.

Robert Spurling has a four-stroke lead in the 13-14 age group following his 79 yesterday. Michael Sims is second on 84 in that division.

A close battle is developing in the boys 11-12 age group where Karol Moore leads by a stroke over Neil Fenton after a round of 74.
