Kyle's hit in Yorkshire

Shawn Goater, received any rave reviews in the national newspapers in England just yet, but his first goals for Scarborough earned him a big write-up in the local papers, the Evening News and Yorkshire Post .

The former PHC hit-man got a mention when he scored his first goal for his new club in the 3-2 away win over Crewe Alexandra. The reporter for the Evening News describing how Lightbourne "gleefully headed home his first goal in English football'' after the ball had come back off the crossbar.

The following week Lightbourne had his pictures spread over the sports pages when he scored the first goal in the 2-0 win over Hereford United, the team of Bermudians Meshach Wade and Kentoine Jennings.

Former Royal Gazette reporter Phil Ascough went along to McCain Stadium to do a feature on Lightbourne for the April issue of RG Magazine and saw him score his second goal in English football. A picture of Ascough interviewing Lightbourne was carried in the Evening News .

In the edition of the Yorkshire Post there was a photo of Goater in a raid on the Exeter goal. Goater also scored on that same Saturday, opening the scoring for Rotherham after just two minutes before they had to settle for a 1-1 draw.

Lightbourne, a former truck driver in Bermuda, was described in one article in the Evening News as a long distance lorry driver in Bermuda, "which is an achievement in itself on an island one mile wide and 20 miles long'', the article read.

The 24-year-old Lightbourne seems to be settling in quickly in his new environment. "He is a great character and he made the lads laugh at half-time at (Crewe) Alexandra,'' manager Ray McHale wrote in his column in the newspaper.

"I simply said to him, `You will feel better for scoring that goal.' It triggered off a five-minute answer by the end of which we were all in hysterics on the floor.'' Scarborough, in the promotion push from the Third Division, do not have a match this weekend while Goater and Rotherham will bid to keep their hopes alive of reaching the First Division next season when they entertain second-placed Port Vale today.
