Lampard to conduct coaching clinic
during the 1970s, will be in Bermuda next month to conduct coaching clinics at BAA as part of their annual coaching programme.
And Frank Worthington, who has been here before for the same purpose, will be returning in September for a weekend coaching stint with the local club.
BAA president David Kneisler confirmed yesterday that the two former English First Division players will be here to give coaching tips to local youngsters.
Lampard will visit between June 8 and 18 and Worthington for clinics on the weekend of September 29 to October 1.
Lampard, formerly a fullback with the Hammers, is also a past England international who won both cup winners and European Cup winners' cup medals with West Ham. He was a member of arguably West Ham's famous and most successful team in the Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters era during a time when Best was also at the London club. Lampard is well remembered for his dance around the corner flag after scoring a goal with a diving header in a European Cup winners final.
Lampard is now a coach at West Ham with his son Frank, jr. now a professional with the club. He will be assisted by his son and another young West Ham professional, Lee Hodges, at the clinics. Both youngsters are just 16 years old.
West Ham, still supported by many locals who followed them during Best's time at the club, avoided the drop to the First Division when they lost just once in their last 10 matches of the season. During that time they beat top clubs Blackburn and Liverpool and then drew with Manchester United on Sunday to prevent them from defending their league title.
The week-long camp at BAA field will commence on Saturday, June 10 at 9 a.m.
and also run through the week between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., ending on June 17 at noon. The charge is $55 per child and is open to all children from nine to 16.
Each child will receive their own football.
BAA's youth soccer programme is now firmly established with the Worthington camp each September. A year ago Kevin Francis, then with Stockport County but now with Birmingham City, assisted with coaching at the club.
The club is hoping that with Lampard's presence this year that between 60 and 70 youngsters will participate. Registration for the camp will be at BAA's office from Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to noon.
"We're continuing with our programme to provide opportunities for clinics to occur here in Bermuda,'' said Kneisler. "We're also taking a group away to a Young Life camp and soccer camp in July in Williamsburg, Virginia.''
