Laser fleet racing revved up at Mangrove Bay on Sunday with nine boats participating off Sandys Boat Club under breezy conditions.
The veteran sailors took advantage of the high winds and put together much different results from a week ago.
Odwin (Mickey) Berkeley was an early favourite, taking the first race, but he ran into problems during the second after entangling his boat with Peter Bromby's. Bromby withdrew from that race but stole the spotlight after that, eventually finishing in first place with 17 points.
Andreas Lewin and Guy Eldridge strung together a bunch of top-three finishes and landed in second and third place respectively. Lewin had 20 points while Eldridge had 28.75 points.
Bromby, his enviable skills shining bright, did not let the events of the second race deter him from finishing first or second in the last seven races of the day.
Berkeley, meanwhile, plummeted to fourth spot in the standings with 41.5 points, unable to get over his mix-up with Bromby's boat.
The remainder of the fleet swapped positions all afternoon with Dave Moore (48 points), Ted Wood (52), Lee White (54) and Martin Siese (55) eventually placing fifth to eighth in the standings. Michael Siese was ninth with 81 points.
Racing continues on Sunday at Mangrove Bay with the first race beginning at 1 p.m.
Racing in the Heineken Spring Series also resumed on Sunday with similar breezy conditions greeting the Laser fleet.
After Adam Barboza captured the first race, Malcolm Smith appeared ready to seize the day. He reeled off five consecutive triumphs before other contenders began to regroup.
Peter Shrubb blasted out of the gate several times only to be overtaken by David Kuhn and Somers Kempe, who broke Smith's blazing streak.
Barboza's two victories just before the final race set up a splendid showdown with Smith.
In the final event, Smith fought off a stiff challenge from Steve Hannon to lead after the opening beat. The second upwind saw Smith's lead fall apart as Barboza grounded him down by the weather mark. A tactical mistake by Barboza allowed Smith to win the race and take the day's top honours.
With five first-place finishes, Smith outscored Barboza four points to three.
Kuhn finished in third place while Kempe was fourth. Shrubb, who has been improving each week, turned in a respectable fifth place finish.
Racing continues on Sunday with a noon start outside Two Rock Passage.
ROAD RUNNING RUN The annual Evian 10-mile road race will be held on Sunday, starting and finishing at The Lagoon property opposite Botanical Gardens on South Shore Road.
Formerly known as the Perrier 10-mile race, this event has been held annually since 1981 and the local record-holders are Mike Watson, for the men, with a time of 51 minutes, 25 seconds, which he set in 1984 and Sandra Mewett for the women in 58:21, which was set in 1985.

The race is part of the KPMG Peat Marwick National Road-Running Series.
Sanctioned by the Bermuda Track and Field Association and organised by the Mid-Atlantic Athletic club, there will be prizes in all age categories for both male and female finishers, plus numerous spot prizes including a $300 travel voucher.
