Late goals carry Colts into final
Dev.Colts 2 North Village 1 Devonshire Colts avenged an earlier loss to North Village in the Dudley Eve tournament by scoring a come-from-behind win at St. David's yesterday to advance to the two-leg final against Vasco.
Colts had been consigned to the losers' bracket after their opening round loss to the Red Devils last week.
And this do-or-die match was following the same script when Kevin Jennings shot Village in front with a spectacular goal early in the second half, only to see Colts turn the match around with two goals in the space of nine minutes late in the game through Mark Ray and Vic Ball.
Now with precious little time to rest injuries to Keenan Burchall and Makonnen Hollis, Colts will go right back into action tomorrow in the first leg of the final against favourites Vasco at Bernard Park (2.30).
The teams spent the first half trying to settle into this semi-final and it wasn't until Jennings' strike that the game lifted to another level.
The best of the early first half chances fell to Mark Ray in the 10th minute when the ball was touched to him on a free kick and his low shot was parried away for a corner by the diving Gladwin Edness.
Close to the break another Village free kick on the right caused trouble, this time when Kevin Jennings drove a low hard cross to the near post where the unmarked Jamal Smith flicked the ball just past the near post.
The Red Devils carried on where they left off and just two minutes after the restart they went ahead when Jennings' shot from the right side of the box smashed into the far top corner with 'keeper Hall helpless.
This goal immediately brought Colts to life and at the other end a good run into the box by Quincy Aberdeen saw Edness make a good save at the near post to concede a corner after narrowing the angle.
Village, in a bid to re-establish their authority in midfield, brought on Nakia Smith -- originally pencilled in to start -- for Cal Dill in the 55th minute. However, it was Colts who continued to threaten as an Aberdeen free kick on the right was tipped over the bar by Edness.
Aberdeen, working tirelessly, eventually began to slow and was replaced by another college student, Sullivan Phillips. That 66th minute substitution proved decisive as the lanky Phillips played a hand in the equalising goal in the 73rd minute.
Phillips laid off a pass after a move down the flank, but the chance seemed lost among too many passes inside the box. However, before Village could clear the danger, Ray smashed a low shot past Edness.
Colts captain Shannon Burgess made a crucial save minutes later after Hall had been lured out of position. A lob towards the empty net by Kevin Jennings was headed off the line by the back-peddling Burgess who struck his head on the far post as he fell back.
Eight minutes from the end Colts found the net for what would prove to be the winner when a quick break saw Ball drive a low shot under the body of Edness from the left side of the box.

Somerset 4 Boulevard 1 Somerset reached the final of the Premier Shell Shield semi-final in the opening match at St. David's, scoring three late goals to break a 1-1 deadlock.
Somerset went ahead in the 47th minute through Rodre Wilson before Ottis Minors equalised for Boulevard five minutes later. Somerset didn't score again until the 70th when Tyrone Smith netted the first of his two goals.
Smith added a second five minutes from the end -- having also missed a penalty -- while Jelani Butterfield closed out the scoring in the 88th minute when he converted a cross from Devon Lambert. Somerset will meet the winners of tomorrow's other semi-final between PHC and Dandy Town at 12.30 at Bernard Park.
