Late salvo puts Town through to final

Dandy Town's late, late show sent them through to the final of the Friendship Trophy last night at the expense of Devonshire Colts.

For long periods it looked like neither side wanted to win as both looked out of sorts, suffering as much from the enforced lay-off as the blustery conditions at Somerset Cricket Club.

Just as it appeared the game might have to go into extra-time, Reggie Tucker and Raymond Beach netted in quick succession to seal the tie.

Tucker couldn't miss, side-footing home a Darron Simons centre from all of three yards on 86 minutes. Three minutes later Beach took advantage of a defensive mix-up between Jahmah Samuels and 'keeper Kevin Bean, poked out a foot and guided the ball goalwards.

That brief spell of action was the most exciting of the entire contest.

All too often balls were hoofed high into the night sky, passes went astray and strikers on both sides appeared to have left their shooting boots in the closet.

Beach was guilty of a missed opportunity in the opening 10 minutes, failing to connect properly with a Paul Cann centre and allowing the ball to drift harmlessly wide.

Colts' Aljame Zuill fashioned a chance for himself on the edge of the box, but he was always being forced away from goal and he was unable to keep his resultant angled shot down.

Colts suffered a blow in the 27th minute when their captain, Shannon Burgess was forced out of the game.

The stopper picked up a knock earlier in the match and although he attempted to play on he had to be replaced by Lloyd Holder.

Within minutes of coming on the sub collected the ball in the box, swivelled but his shot was too tame and went past the post and out of play.

He missed another opportunity shortly after when he arrived moments too late to connect to a low corner fired across the box.

Clevon Hill fired over for Colts just after the break and Beach spurned another chance when well placed eight yards out.

With half-an-hour to go Dennis Zuill kept Colts in the game, the defender making a last ditch tackle in the box to prevent Paul Cann from opening the scoring.

The Town player should certainly have found the target as the clock ran down.

Bean and a Colts defender came for the same ball, collided and ended up in a crumpled heap on the ground.

However, Cann couldn't and the ball deflected wide for a corner. As if the thought of playing another 30 minutes in the freezing cold was too much to bear, Dandy Town came forward again and the pressure bore fruit with the goals from Tucker and Beach.
