Lightbourne's squad interested in local tour

Bermuda next month, The Royal Gazette has learned.

But the date and length of the trip will depend on two factors, whether the Third Division club wins outright promotion or grabs a Second Division spot via the play-offs.

"Paul Taylor, the general manager, called me into his office and said he was trying to arrange a trip to Bermuda,'' Lightbourne disclosed yesterday.

"Whether we make automatic promotion or not, we will still come. He was asking me about the facilities. If we do come most likely we will play a match, but I can't really say what's going to happen.

"I'm hoping it can happen, it would be exciting for the players to see where I came from. Plus, they're all keen on golf.'' Bermuda Football Association (BFA) coach Jon Beard, the local figure behind the tour, could not be reached yesterday. BFA secretary general David Sabir was also not available for comment.

Depending on how their next three matches go, Walsall will either be coming here to celebrate promotion or to prepare for the play-offs which involve the third through sixth-placed teams in the standings. The play-offs final will take place at Wembley Stadium.

Walsall are already assured of at least a play-off spot.

The Midlands club is involved in one of the closest promotion races in the English League, battling for the second automatic promotion spot with second-placed Chesterfield and fourth-placed Bury, all with three matches remaining.

Walsall's match tonight away to Bury has been put back to next Thursday -- their final regular season match -- because two Walsall players, striker Kevin Wilson and goalkeeper Trevor Wood are involved in a European Cup qualifier with Northern Ireland.

On Saturday, Walsall are home to Scunthorpe before travelling away to Scarborough, Lightbourne's former team, next Tuesday.

"We have to keep on winning and we need Chesterfield to slip up,'' said Lightbourne, who took his tally for the season to 26 with his team's second goal in the 2-0 win over Wigan on Saturday. That win moved Walsall a point behind Chesterfield, who still have to play division leaders Carlisle, and three ahead of Bury.

"We're trying to hang in there and hopefully things can work our way,'' said Lightbourne. "If Chesterfield slip up we need to take our chance.'' Chesterfield are away to Darlington while Bury are away to Lincoln this weekend, teams in either the middle or lower end of the table. But even the members of those teams have plenty to play for.

"Players are now playing for contracts so they will be putting their all into it,'' said Lightbourne. "It's not like they're just waiting for the season to end.'' Lightbourne, as was the case at the start of the season, has moved ahead of fellow Bermudian Shawn Goater in the scoring charts. Goater has 25 goals while Lightbourne still has a chance of reaching the 30-goal plateau he set for himself early in the season.

"If I can get to 30 it would be a great achievement for my first full season,'' said Lightbourne, who in his shortened season with Walsall last term managed to score 10 goals.

"The last player at Walsall to score so many goals was David Kelly of Wolves who managed 28 about seven or so years ago,'' said Lightbourne.

Lightbourne is just one goal behind the top scorer in the Third Division so he still has his sights set on being the top marksman in the division.
