Lions BarNes and Clarke on tap for Easter classic
Classic, which will be held at National Sports Club on April 11 at 3.30 p.m.
This year's game marks the 20th since the series began in 1972.
Stuart Barnes and Ben Clarke -- recently selected for the British Lions tour to New Zealand -- will be making their first appearance in the Classic. Brian Robinson of Ireland and Denis Chavet of France will also be making their first appearances.
Making return visits will be Irish team members Brendan Mullin, Neil Francis, Simon Geoghegan and Jim Staples and Richard Hill of England and Jean-Marc Lafonde of France.
Barnes, first selected for England in a 1984 game against Australia, has been a replacement in recent years, but was selected for a series against Scotland last month and it was a dream return to the international scene. Barnes enjoyed an outstanding game. Later, he gained his 10th cap, against Ireland.
Clarke played in England's four international matches this season, taking over the number eight position from Dean Richards. Clarke played for England B in 1991 and, like Barnes, is a member of Bath.
Robinson was a stand-out in Ireland's victory over England last month, a game that many thought would land him a spot for the Lions tour.
Robinson's debut came in 1991 against France and he has represented his country 18 times. He was the top try-scoring forward in the 1991 World Cup and currently plays for London Irish.
Charvet played his first game for France in 1986 and has played 30 times for his country at centre. A film actor by profession, he is as comfortable on the pitch as he is behind the camera. He has scored 35 points since his debut.
Mullin is making his sixth appearance in the Easter Classic, having captained the Irish to their 10th victory last year. Mullin played 45 times for Ireland and once for the Lions and is captain of Blackrock, a First Division team.
Francis is making his second appearance in the Classic. Injuries have prevented him from gaining a larger number of caps, and a healthier Francis would have been an automatic selection for this year's Lions squad.
Geohegan will also be making his second appearance. With 16 caps for Ireland, he is one of rugby's most exciting players, having scored four tries for his country on the wing. He was first capped against France in 1991 and played against England last month.
Staples was first capped against Wales in 1991 and has played seven times for Ireland at full-back. Injuries have forced him off the 1993 Irish team.
Hill will be participating in his third Classic. He played 29 times for England from 1984 to 1992 at scrum-half. He also played for England in the 1991 World Cup final.
Lafonde is a member of the French B and Barbarians clubs. He also played in last year's Classic.
Other additions to the overseas roster include out-half Niall Malone, an Irish club member whose memorable games include two against France and Scotland earlier this year. He was also a member of the Oxford University rugby team.
Matt Keenan is the first Western Samoan to play in the Classic. He has played 14 times for his country and was one of the outstanding forwards of the 1991 World Cup.
The overseas team will arrive next Thursday and the Bermuda squad will be named following Sunday's Nicholl Shield final.
Tickets, which are $5, will be available at the gate before the match.
JIM STAPLES -- One of a number of top stars who will be in Bermuda next week for the Easter Classic.
