Local favourite Conley qualifies for US open
Open Championship with a 36-hole score of 139 at the Golf Club of Georgia on Tuesday.
Conley, who set local golfing circles alight with a splendid fortnight of tournament play last December, was the second of four to qualify for the June 18-21 championship to be played at Pebble Beach GC in California.
Conley is a former Bermuda Open winner, but his best play here came in the final round of the Belmont when he overhauled Paul Parajeckas with a superb 64 in unkind conditions.
He followed that up by helping Chateau Elan to retain their net division title in the annual Goodwill Tournament and then the Lobster Pot Pro-Am. The only failing was a second-place finish in the Goodwill Professional Championship after taking a bogey on the final hole.
Ninety-seven players from 13 sites across the United States qualified for the prestigious event on Monday and Tuesday.
Bermudian Anthony Mocklow was amongst the many who failed after carding a 151 at Woodmont CC in Rockville, Maryland, on Monday.
Mocklow is in illustrious company, however, as the great Greg Norman of Australia is being forced to play a waiting game as an alternate after losing a play-off for the final spot at The Lakes Club in Columbus, Ohio, on Monday.
