Manders-led stars shoot to the top

Arnold Manders took three for five in the midst of a Flatts middle-order collapse and then led a charmed life before finishing not out on 33 to pace Stars at St. John's field on Sunday.

It was a game of misses as all the top scorers had at least one reprieve, starting with Flatts skipper Rodney Woolridge who was put down twice early in his innings before making 38.

In the end, Woolridge's contribution was largely responsible for Flatts reaching the century mark as Wayne Richardson assisted Manders by taking three for 33 from 13 overs.

Woolridge hit four fours in his 96-minute knock before holing out to substitute fielder Malcolm Woodley on the square leg boundary off Richardson.

Opening bat Troy Dean (15) was the only other in double figures.

Stars' Dexter Smith and Gregory Sampson rput on 40 for the first wicket before the latter was trapped leg before by Brandon Woolridge for seven.

A brief period of success continued for Flatts as Mackie Woolridge had Hasan Durham (two) stumped with the score 47 and Brandon Woolridge had Smith caught for 34 at square leg eight runs later. Smith hit a six and four fours.

But Manders, who skied an attempted on drive that Rodney Woolridge failed to even put a hand on, saw it through as Stars picked up 15 points for the win and vaulted over Bailey's Bay and Cleveland into first place. Manders hit a six and a four.

Mackie Woolridge finished with two for 26 and Brandon with two for 38.

Cleveland 125 Somerset 126-2 Jermaine Warner hammered 78 not out and Davon Wade made 35 to lead Somerset to an eight-wicket victory over Cleveland at Sea Breeze Oval.

The two joined in a second-wicket stand that put on 59 runs, which was a partnership that came after they west-enders lost the wicket of opener Donovan Livingston (nought) with two runs scored. Warner, playing his finest innings of the season, slammed eight fours and a six. He was particuarly aggressive during the early part of his innings, reaching his half-century off 59 balls.

The only bowlers taking wickets for Cleveland were Albert Simons with one for 18 and skipper Peter Philpott with one for 25.

Earlier, Cleveland reached their modest total of 125, thanks to a sixth-wicket stand of 52 between Aaron Adams (26) and Jermaine Postlethwaite (25).

Also in double figures were opener Grant Smith with 20, Philpott with 20 and Allan Douglas with 16.

Spinner James Swan took three for three, Anthony Bailey three for 49, Shannon Warner two for 16 and Livingston two for 35 as Somerset's bowlers did well in the absence of Perry Maybury.

Warwick 138 Devonshire 139-2 A patient 47 by opener Donald Norford spurred Devonshire to an easy eight-wicket win against an overmatched Warwick at Devonshire Rec.

After a string of low scores, Norford finally hit paydirt, batting throughout his side's innings and facing 83 balls. Also making valuable contributions were James Pace (30 not out), who lit into the bowling with five fours in his 26-minute stay at the crease, and Albert Steede (27).

Earlier, Leon Place once again showed his worth with the ball as he claimed figures of four for 20 from 12 unchanged overs of medium-pace.

High scorer for Warwick was Jeffrey James (35), while others getting in double figures were Anthony Hayward (17), Kevin Dill (10) and Eugene Pitt (16).

Somerset Bridge 69 Nationals 70-4 Opening bowlers Chris Wright and John Ray shared six wickets between them as they inspired Nationals to an easy six-wicket victory over Somerset Bridge at Nationals.

Wright took four for 19, John Ray two for 26 and Mark Ray two for 11. Bridge had only one period of stability and this came when Gladwin Ingham (37 not out) and Durwood Cann (eight) put on 28 for the seventh wicket, taking the score from 20 for six.

Nationals recovered after losing openers Wright (two) and Gary Knight (three) for only eight runs. But Jason Lewis (29) and Mark Ray (20) added 59 for the third wicket to prevent further disaster although both were dismissed on 67.
