Marshall forced to paly catch-up again

tie -- after the opening round of the 54-hole Great Lakes Buick Junior Tournament in Flint, Michigan, yesterday.

And like she did in her first tournament last week in South Carolina, the 17-year-old Marshall will spend the next two rounds trying to close the gap between herself and the leaders. In South Carolina, she battled back from five strokes behind on the first day to finish second, three shots behind winner Dina Taylor.

Yesterday, her round of 83 left her with an even bigger gap to close on joint leaders Heather Hoffman of Metamora, Illinois, and Lisa Penske of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, who carded 76s. In third is Jennifer Gray of Martinsville, Indiana, on 78 while Jenny Chuasiriporn of Timonium, Maryland, is fourth on 79.

Three further strokes back on 82 are local girl Amy Loviscek, and Andrea Bullock of East Lansing, Michigan, while Marshall is tied on 83 with Julie Norris of Crown Point, Indiana, Lori Schlissberg of East Lansing, Michigan, and Laurianne Berles of Grandville, Michigan.

Eighteen players are competing in the girls division with only Jeanne Anne Krizman having played against Marshall in the Ping Myrtle Beach Junior Classic last week. Yesterday she shot an 85.

Marshall, as expected, has been chosen to compete on the Bermuda women's team for the World Amateur Team Championships in Vancouver in September. The soon-to-be freshman at Wake Forest University joins Madeline Joell and Judithann Astwood on the three-member women's team while the men's team is made up of Arthur Jones, Glenn Simmons, Robert Vallis and Jack Wahl.

Young Quinton Sherlock shot a 75 yesterday to go with a first-round 78 to lie in sixth place in the prestigious North/South Junior Championships at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina.

Competing in the 12-13 years age group, Sherlock is 12 strokes behind leader Howard Charles of New Jersey who has had rounds of 74 and 67 with 18 holes to play today.

Sherlock is accompanied in North Carolina by two other Bermuda Junior Golf Association regulars in the same age group, Robert Spurling and Michael Sims.

Spurling is in 15th place in the 36-player field with a total of 85-78--163 and Sims is 23rd on 90-81--171 as all three of the young Bermudians made improvements on their first-round scores.

QUINTON SHERLOCK -- Doing well in Noarth Carolina.
