Marshall improves to fourth

further stroke behind the leader despite a much-improved round of 76 yesterday on the second day of the Great Lakes Buick Junior in Flint, Michigan, for a 36-hole total of 159.

While Marshall was shooting the second best round of the day, Lisa Penske had the day's best round of 75 to move into first place on 151.

Marshall trails the leader by eight strokes and with the final round today has virtually been ruled out of winning this tournament.

Unless Penske shoots in the 80s today the highest Marshall can expect to finish is second or third, to add to her second-place finish in the Ping Myrtle Beach Classic last week.

"I putted a lot better today,'' the teenager said last night. "Yesterday I played the front nine okay (38) but messed up on the back nine (45).'' Penske's 75 put her in sole possession of first place by four shots over Heather Hoffman, with whom she shared the lead on Tuesday after both shot 76.

Jennifer Gray of Indiana stayed in third place despite her 79 yesterday and she leads fourth-placed Marshall by two shots.

Marshall played alongside Penske for the second straight day and is impressed with her opponent. "She's been steady the whole way around,'' said Marshall.

"She hits the ball okay but putts very well. The course is in really good shape, the greens are undulating and are pretty quick. There are some tough, long holes.'' Quinton Sherlock slipped three places to finish ninth in the North/South Junior Championships at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina yesterday.

Sherlock shot an 81 to lead the local trio of youngsters in the 12-13 years age group, finishing on 234 -- 24 over par. Robert Spurling shot an 84 to finish 18th on 247 while Michael Sims had a final-round 87 to place 28th in the 36-player field on 258.

Second-round leader Howard Charles, of New Jersey, shot an even-par 70 to win the tournament by one stroke on 211.

The three Bermudians will stay on in North Carolina for a week's tuition at the Pinehurst Golf School.
