Miller makes her mark with new 800m record

record-breaking performance in her first meet in the 13-14 age group during the second day of competition at the Winter Age Group Championships at the BASA pool on Saturday.

Miller only turned 13 a couple of weeks ago. And she celebrated in great style, pacing herself brilliantly to a 10:17.34 time in the 800 metres freestyle, breaking the old record of 10:20.39 set by Lisa Petty in 1988.

Miller's talent appears to be in the longer distance events and she is now seen as one of the Island's most promising competitors.

Some particularly good times were produced by the younger swimmers on Saturday, especially among the girls who often swam faster than their male counterparts in the same age group.

In the eight and under division, Brianna Holmes of Triangles continued her winning streak with first place finishes in both the 50 metres butterfly and the 100 metres breaststroke, five and 15 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor respectively.

Meghan Jones ran away with the 100 metres freestyle title and was second in the butterfly while twin sister Sophie took second in the breaststroke.

In the boys events, Roy-allan Burch had two first place finishes in the 100 metres freestyle and the 50 metres butterfly. He was well ahead in the freestyle but just pipped Stephen Kenny of Triangles in the butterfly by four hundredths of a second.

Adam Petty of Triangles took the 100 breaststroke, beating out team-mate Kenny. Seven-year-old Richard Collis took second place in the freestyle.

Emma Rego of Sharks won all three races in the girls nine to 10 category by a wide margin. Linn Holmertz was second in the freestyle, Erica Frith in the breaststroke and Keira Aitken in the butterfly. No one swimmer dominated the nine to 10 boys events as Richard Jones of Triangles, Darryl Steynor of Sharks and Scott Simmons of Harbour each won one event. And all the races proved competitive with a number of close finishes.

Jones finished the freestyle less than a second ahead of Steynor and Simmons out-touched Paul Murphy of Triangles by a second and a half in the breaststroke. Steynor was well ahead of his nearest rival, Richard Jones, in the butterfly.

Twelve-year-old Jessica Sousa of Sharks produced a fine time of 1:21.51 in the 100 metres butterfly, 15 seconds faster than second place finisher, team-mate Candace Marson and even faster than the winner of the boys event in the 11-12 age group.

Sousa also won the 200 metres freestyle ahead of Marson again. Kim Frith of Sharks won the 200 metres breaststroke, beating out Sousa by four seconds.

Nuri Latham of Sharks swam a clever tactical race in the 200 metres freestyle in the boys 11-12 age group, outfoxing his Harbour club rival, Paul Fox.

Latham swam a fast first 100 metres and even though Fox swam a faster second 100, his effort came too late as Latham grabbed first place in a time of 2:20.41.

Latham also produced the fastest times in the 100 metres fly and the 200 metres breaststroke. Graham Smith of Triangles was second in the fly and Paul Fox was runner-up in the breaststroke.

In the girls 13-14 events, Zoe Roberts of Sharks was second to Elisha Miller of Harbour in the 800 metres freestyle and also won the 200 metres breaststroke, beating out team-mates Abigail Madeiros and Jenny Munro. Miller was a distant fifth.

An exciting finish highlighted the 200 metres butterfly with both Roberts and Miller swimming well with Miller waiting until the last 25 metres to pull ahead and win by a fingertip -- eight 100ths of a second, 2:53.54 to 2:53.62.

Both girls were only six seconds off Judith Brewster's record.

Ronald Cowen of Sharks finished a full minute ahead of second placed Michael Pantry of Harbour in the 13 and 14 1500 freestyle in a time of 18:46.33.

Pantry took first place in the 200 metres butterfly in a time of 2:58.32 with Trevor Leitch of Sharks the only other competitor. Cowen also won the 200 metres breaststroke with Jonathan Ward of Triangles in second place.

Alicia Mullan won all three events in the girls open category ahead of team-mate Tamika Williams. In the boys events, Trevor Ferguson won the 1500 metres freestyle, Stephen Fahy the 200 metres butterfly and Craig Ferguson the 200 metres breaststroke as expected.

The final day of competition in the championships takes place on Saturday, November 19 with the sprints over 50 and 100 metres.
