Millington still the master

when he beat out a strong field at Southside in the Bermuda Bicycle Association Category Two and Three 35-mile road race.

In windy conditions and on a course that included fast flat sections and demanding hills, the event got off to a cautious start for the first five miles before Millington's team-mate Greg Hopkins began to test the field.

He launched a series of attacks that were chased down by the rest of the riders.

On the fifth of nine laps, Millington attacked off the front and opened up a gap of between 15 and 20 seconds, before the rest of the field attempted to organise a chase down.

At one point it looked like Millington would be pulled back, but with a strong headwind and a dwindling chase pack, the efforts of in-form Karl Outerbridge, Melanie Claude, Julia Hawley and Damion Wilson came to nothing and he began to extend his lead, riding to a solo victory in one hour 39 minutes and 12 seconds.

The race for second was decided when Hopkins attacked on the final series of hills on the last lap and opened up a 30-second lead to finish in 1:41.12.

In a sprint finish, Wilson broke away to take third in 1:41.45, a second ahead of Claude, with Hawley edging out Outerbridge in 1:41.59 and 1:42.00 respectively -- both women showing great form for the upcoming World B Championships in China in June.

Wilson took top honours in the Category Three division and in a six-man sprint Gino Crofton took second in 1:48.11, edging out Carlos DeSilva who recorded 1:48.12.

Kevin Topple, Martin Pettit, Jay Simons and Dave Ferguson were all timed within one tenth of a second.

Matthew Herring, at 14-years-old, continued to impress as he stayed with the leaders and outsprinted veteran Vic Ball for the second time this season.

Other winners were David Hill in the novices, Wenda Godfrey in the open female, Carolyn Conway in the female veterans, Chloe Kempe in the girls' 15-16, Geoffrey Smith in the boys' 13-14, Ricky Sousa in the boys' 11-12 and Marc Smith in the boys' 10 and under.
